I finally birthed our daughter... but we are still having a rough transition.
Anneliese Simone was born October 15 at 11:44 am, weighing 10 lbs, 3 oz and measuring twenty-three inches.
Unfortunately we are not quite out of the woods. We were ready to be discharged at twenty-four hours (by choice) and Anneliese had passed all her evaluations with flying colors, but just as we were gathering up the last of our belongings and getting ready to leave Anneliese began shaking and turning blue. We rushed her to the nurses' station, and she was given blow-by oxygen while the doctors were called for a new evaluation.
As we waited for them to bring our daughter back to the room - as patiently as we could, given the circumstances - we were unaware that she was having several more seizures. The decision was made to transfer Anneliese to the neonatal intensive care nursery in which I work, and we witnessed still more seizures before the ambulance arrived.
Anneliese had a normal CT scan, but despite a normal background to her EEG she showed light seizure activity in the foreground, primarily on the right side. No definite cause for the seizures has been determined, but the doctors are fairly certain this is lingering birth trauma, and with a few months of medication to prevent any recurrance they should essentially be self-correcting.
After several days in the NICU we were discharged, but after less than twenty-four hours in our home my blood pressure began climbing to dangerous levels. My family struggles with a tendency toward high blood pressure, but mine has always been well controlled.
We are now back in the hospital, as the physicians work to bring everything back into the proper range. After three days of hospitalization we are hoping to finally be discharged home tomorrow.
Any prayers are warmly welcomed. God is indeed good; despite trouble, we are deeply aware of our blessings. We can only imagine how different things might have been if God had NOT been watching over us!
Thankfully, breastfeeding is going great and Anneliese made it through the NICU without getting a drop of formula! We are still getting a chance to bond, just not at home where we would like. I will post pictures later when I get a chance. Hopefully, I can finally try my cloth diapers when we get home as well! I have been away this whole week so I can't wait to go back and read about all the latest arrivals!
