What do you get at the dollar store? - Page 3

I just went and got tons of stocking stuffers!!! (I have a million and a half people to buy for- no one else will host Christmas in either of our families, so I have taken it upon myself).

I got awesome pocket knives for the boys (they are really cute and brushed silver- I think they look cooler than the expensive swiss army knives!)
Candles (not the greatest quality- but you're going to burn it anyway!)
hacky sacks
ADORABLE tie died socks for all of the girls
big flashlights
Really cute knitted scarves for some of the girls. I was really excited about this- they were good colors and not tacky! I would have never guessed I would find a cute scarf at a dollar store.

I ended up with other things- but I can't remember...

I got all excited after reading all of this, that I went out to the dollar store on my lunch. I bought a $1 soldering iron! I love random dollar store finds.

Almost everything I've ever bought at a dollar store has been junk and not worth it. (Not everything, but most things.) I stick to thrift stores.

I do think dollar stores and the like prey on poor people a bit, because they create the impression that things are inexpensive when really they're just cheap, if you know what I mean...it's not a good buy if it breaks the 1st time you use, the socks shrink into sad little nothings when you wash them, the particle-board shelf you bought is worthless as a resale item, etc. I still check them out sometimes, but in my experience they're only occasionally worth it. Same with many 'liquidators,' etc.

I agree... dollar store items are usually junk. If I buy anything there, I assume it is a "1 use" item that will be thrown away after using it that one time. I also do not like that most of the stuff is made in sweatshops and use child labor for manufacturing. They just go against everything I believe in, specifically fair wages and quality products that do not go to landfill.

I understand the negatiity toward the Dollar stores, but I waffle about it. I have bought:

Scrapbooking supplies
hair thingies
wrapping paper
small toys (rubber balls, playing cards)
books
hand sanitizer

I agree. I'm also a huge fan of estate sales for household items. I did go to our Dollar Tree for the first time today. Dd1 has extremely thick hair, and the little metal clips just can't hold it. We found the old school plastic barrettes I'd been looking for for about a year (a friend tipped me off), in a sea of junk. Most of it was overpriced. Things like foil and tissues were in very small quantities, making them more expensive than the supermarket generics. The hairclips may also be overpriced junk... only time will tell. I didn't have time to comb the store for bargains, or the inclination for that matter... That sort of store gives me a headache. It's just so crammed and overwhelming.

I will definitely keep the pregnancy tests in mind, though. I would have never thought to look there.
