Baby clothes quilt

I have a bunch of DD's stained clothes, and I'm trying to find something to do with them. I thought of cutting them up to make a quilt, but don't really know how.
Can I use just any clothes (I've got mostly cotton, but they're basically cheapo preschool clothes)?
Can I sew this by hand, or at least the patches, and then get a machine to make it into a quilt? I don't own a sewing machine.

Where can I find instructions for a quilt like that?

you could do it all by hand - including the quilting if you want to! What I would do is just do ribbon or yarn ties to "quilt" it together (to hold the batting, top, and bottom in place). To make it easiest I would just do a simple square patchwork quilt.... cute idea!

If the fabrics are knit...

you might want to get the cotton fabric that irons on to the knit to stabilize it better.

Then you would just cut out squares, using a set seam allowance (1/4 or 1/2 inch) you could sew it all together by hand.
When the top is finished you layout the backing of the quilt first, wrong side up then the batting in the middle (or flannel if you want a light blanket)
then the top right side up.

You can use crochet thread, yarn or embroidery thread to create a tie in each square through all the layers.

Thanks! I'm not really sure I understood, I'll go over it, maybe get someone to make it clearer, since I know zilch about sewing.
The idea isn't mine, I read about it somewhere and thought it would be cute.

Your local library will have quilting books

Sometimes it is hard to visualize sewing and patterns -- so books will be a great help to you to see how they piece together!

I saw a beatiful quilt like that on Martha Stewart. It was called a Memory Quilt. I plan on making one for each of my girls (since I am still pg with the second this will be a few years in the future LOL). I have a wonderful quilting ruler that combined with a rotary cutter makes nice even squares. I actually have two rulers one for 4 in. and one for 6 in. The actual rulers are 4.5 and 6.5 inches to leave a quarter inch seam allowance on each side. I second the idea of looking at quilting books at the library, I am a visual person and that really helped me. Also check out local sewing stores, many have classes you could take.
