communicating gift wishes to family???

Okay, in my family we are down with wish-lists. (I understand that they can seem tacky to some people, but we don't have enough $ to be spending on something that someone doesn't care about.) However, both my mom and my mil have expressed interest in learning more about WHY I don't want tons of plastic/scripted toys (etc.) for my dd. They are genuinely interested in what my dh and I value, but I don't know where to point them in terms of reading materials. Has anyone read any good articles or books about natural toys and creative play? Are there websites that explain their philosophy in addition to selling great stuff? I was hoping to articulate to them a bit about why natural, open-ended toys make me so excited, but I'm feeling a little bit at a loss for words. Furthermore, I don't want to drown in the materialism of Christmas (or birthdays) and would like to communicate that less is more. How do you handle this with your families without seeming like a snob?

There might be something in the book Living Simply with Children. My big thing is I don't want their minds colonized by advertising/big corporations.

I love this article about natural toys: http://www.threesisterstoys.com/parenting/abouttoys.htm

Maybe something like that site is what you are looking for? The woman who runs it is also an MDC mom, she's wonderful to order from if your family decides to shop there. Good luck!

The website www.threesisterstoys.com not only has beautiful things, but they also have great parents resources pages that explain about creative play and natural playthings.

My son has been able to recognize the Fisher-Price logo since before he was 18 months old. It's on his toy train, all itty-bitty, and every time he sees it *anywhere* he points it out and say "choo-choo". It's scary!

I was also going to suggest the three sisters website.
