Wool Care

Ok - I've made my first pair of longies from a 100% merino wool sweater (got a hat out of it too!) and I'm not sure what to do first - wash it or lanolize it? Also, what kind of soap do you use and what is your lanolizing method?

Thanks!

I wash with a bit of mild hand soap, then rinse, then lanolize in a second rinse. To lanolize, I use lasinoh. I put about 1/2 inch per pant in a measuring cup, add about a cup of water, and microwave it for 1-2 minutes to melt the lanolin. The I add a drop of the same hand soap to the measuring cup and wisk it with a fork. The liquid should look milky with no obvious yellow globs of melted lanolin, the soap helps to break up the fat. Then I pour it in the rinse water with the pants (inside out so the lanolin is mostly on the inside), squish them around, remove and squeeze the water out gently. I usually spin the water out in the washer spin cycle, one without additional rinse water added, turned right side out again. Then I lay them on the dryer to dry.

Isn't merino nice?

Yes, Merino is soooo soft. I felt very lucky to find this sweater at a local thrift shop for $3 . I have been looking for wool for a week now and haven't found any ... but this sweater was worth the wait!! I'm really proud of how it turned out also, considering I have never sewn before!

I usually was the sweater before I make the longies and then only need to lanolize once it's sewed up.
