Knitting wool puddlepad

Thread Starter
I am knitting my first wool baby project. I want to make a pad to put under the sheets for the pack n' play bassinet so that if there is a leak it wont get through to the pad. I was planning to just knit a big rectangle and felt it. Does this make sense or should I just knit it and not felt it? If I don't felt it should I just do I garter stitch? Also do I need to lanolize it if it is felted?

I knitted a rectangle in garter stitch and felted it, but did not lanolize it. Works fine. If I used it more often (it's in the cosleeper and DD usually just sleeps in bed w/me), I would lanolize it.
