How much umbilical cord to leave?

Nowadays, it seems that only about an inch of cord is left on the baby. When my little sisters were born in '85, they came home with six inches of cord left on. Why the change? It seems like a longer cord would dry out better and fall off earlier, as the wetness inside the bellybutton would get wicked out. My son hardly had any cord left on, and since he had an innie from the start, it all got sucked in and always seemed moist. It took two weeks to fall off.

my midwife recmmended cutting it longer, like you stated...she said it falls off quicker that way.
We cut it about medium i think?

We left a good 2+ inches on dd#2, she was born on Mon, and her cord fell off early this am.
