So, my SIL, the LC, gave me "The Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD to watch.
Anyone used it? Did it help? Feedback please.
(Is it worth my precious time, or should I just watch a re-run of Battlestar Galactica?)

i'd say its worth it ... only about 40min long and has some great pointers on calming fussy babies

ok, we watched most of it... and we were doing all those things, but not necessarily all at the same time.
So, we all slept better last night and I feel much more chipper this am. Time will tell if it was coincidental. Thansk for replying.

YES!!! The 5 S's were a lifesaver for us.

most of it is what kinda comes naturally to most moms i think, but i like that he gives reasons why they work. (and the suggestion to do more/all of them at once) also i wasnt swaddling really well and didnt think about the shhhhhh directly in the ear ... turned up the radio on an off station last night for a while and that worked like magic too

We have it, and have tried the 5 s's, but little Elisabeth is one PICKY girl and hates all of it. The shooshing worked for the first couple of weeks, but not anymore. All that works is bouncing her on the ball...

It's worth a try though!

luckily my birth center had this on dvd for me to watch. i am glad i didn't have to spend the money for it but also glad i watched it. half the stuff is natural but the side/stomach laying and the shhhhhh is something i remember. i haven't really used it enough to perfect a way to instantly calm like he does but i also liked how he explained all the movement and stuff and i feel "better" about putting her in a swing so i can get stuff done. ds never needed that stuff and i was confuzled with this dear little girl!!

Oh man, this DVD saved my life. In fact, DD was just HOOOWWWLING, SCREEEEEEEEEEEAMING like the world was ending, and I used those techniques for 10 minutes (including nursing for the "sucking" component) and she is sleeping peacefully now. It does not always work that fast, but it often does. I plan to tell every pregnant friend I encounter to watch this thing. Seriously.

The techniques (5 S's) may come naturally to some moms, but I had NO experience with babies -- they didn't come naturally to me! Even if you did have experience w/ babies, I think it would be a very helpful DVD. My new mama friend and I agreed that watching the Dr. soothe baby after baby on screen, like magic, was like new parent porn.
