natural kitchen help

I need advice how to keep a natural healthy kitchen. Okey the goal is less chemicals, less plastic, less disposable stuff, less clutter/mess.

Cutting boards. We have a tiny plastic one which isn't cutting it (no pun) as we're eating more and more fresh foods. But do wood ones get moldy or split/splinter?

Diswasher. We use regular detergent at this point, but I keep having flashbacks to how I ate dishwasher detergent as a kid. My husband likes that it has bleach i it and kills germs, but is there something else I can use?

Cloths for cleaning/ dishrags. We use birdseye cotton for wiping things down, but they sometimes get stained and moldy (ew). I sometimes use 3% hydrogen peroxide in the bleach dispenser and vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser tohelp disinfect them, but I don't know if this helps with laundry. Any ideas?

Storing foods. We're switching to pyrex storage containers for foods. What abou plastic bags? Do you leave bagged dry cereals in the bag?

Toddler eating utensils/bowls/plates. I know wood is good, but how do you clean it? What do they coat it with? Are they sturdy? And cups for little ones? (dd is 14 months old and occasionally uses a plastic sippy cup)

Cleaning veggies. I'm paranoid about cleaning veggies, especially leafy greens. I usually soak them in a veggie wash/water mix in a bowl, then drain and rinse in a collander to get out any little bugs hiding in the leaves and clean off any pathogens.

Sprays. I use bi-o-kleen or vinegar.

Cookware. I thought I read teflon isn't so bad, but I know aluminum isn't the best, is that right? What's relatively easy to keep clean and not too expensive but totally safe? Iron?

Cutting boards- Wood is nice to cut on. After a while they can get moldy and splintery. I had one for several years before I had to get rid of it. You can always use it for firewood or just put it outside when you are done in the dirt.

Dishwasher- I don't have one anymore. But when I did I used to buy the Seventh Generation dish detergent.

Cleaning Clothes- I use old wash clothes or old scrubbies. I am sure mine are not as sterile as they could be. When I wash them I used vinegar and baking soda.

Storing foods- For the cereal bags I just close them well with a rubber band and make sure they are stored in a safe place from bugs and mice!

Toddler eating utensils- I am not there yet. My son is 7 months. I will most likely just use tupperware and small utensils.

Veggies-I never tried the veggire wash. Do you like it? I usually just wash them. Is the special wash better?

Sprays-I usually don't buy them very often. I like the Ms.Meyers stuff though.

Cookware-I have a bunch of teflon stuff. I cannot afford to go out and by a bunch of new cookware. I have one cast iron pan that i like alot.

I haven't gone completely natural, but it's something I'm phasing in slowly.

We have wooden chopping boards for dryish type things, but are still using plastic for meat and veges. I think wood is naturally disinfecting though.

I just buy an eco friendly dishwasher powder - I don't find things are as shiny and sparkling, but forgotten what they used to look like, so I don't mind now.

I use cloth for everything in the kitchen - it is replaced and washed daily so no chance of them getting mouldy or smelly. I don't wash in anything special, just with the rest of the washing. I am getting some cute crocheted cloths made at the moment in funky cotton colour combos.

I'm not so good on storage at the moment - everything is in plastic, but I would like to switch to glass jar storage.

I only use vinegar or baking soda for cleaning.

I think ideally you'd want to move away from teflon - I tossed out frying pan recently. All of our cookware is either glass, stainless steel or cast iron.

I wonder if you could soak your veggies in a vinegar/water mix without them absorbing the flavour?

Cutting boards - we have one plastic one for cutting raw meat on, but usually use wood. Ours have held up well. If you oil them periodically (with a food safe oil of course - like walnut oil) they will last longer.

Dishwasher detergent - we use 7th Generation and it works great. There are a few other natural brands out there too - if you have a coop or health food store they should have it.

Cloths - I find it helpful to have different categories of cloths. I care what my dish-drying towels look (and smell) like, but not so much the cloths I use to clean up spills on the floor.

Food storage - you could try putting food in a cloth bag (which could be washed as needed) and then inside a plastic bag (to make it airtight so the food doesn't spoil). The cloth will keep the plastic bag cleaner so it can be reused more times. Also, for garbage bags, you can get recycled or biodegradable ones.

Toddler eating utensils - you can buy child sized metal utensils. We have these: http://www.oneida.com/index.cfm/fuse...4-9b85c9b6799c
For plates/bowls I just used Corelle break-resistant stuff (they are basically made of glass) until dd was ready for a normal plate. You have to throw them pretty hard to break them - she never managed to do it.

I think it's grapefruit seed oil (or extract?) I was just reading about that was supposed to make a good veggie wash when added to water? You could search the internet for grapefruit seed oil and see if anything comes up. It was good for tons of other things too, so you wouldn't have to own it just for that!

Our wooden cutting boards have not gotten moldy or splintered yet . . .

You could transfer dry cereal and other such goods into cannisters, or other non-plastic storage . . . I'm still working on replacing our plastic storage. I love the cloth bag inside plastic bag idea from the previous poster.

Vinegar is a disinfectant, and I understand there to be essential oils that disinfect like tea tree oil. I use baking soda and vinegar in our laundry, and occasionally use a natural laundry detergent from our health food store (like on dh's grimey construction clothes). Maybe you could use a natural disinfectant in the dishwasher too? I don't have one, but use natural dish soap on dishes. I know the question has come up before. Maybe you could search for dishwasher in this forum and see what comes up!

I want to get some Kleen Kanteens for dd (and myself) to drink out of. They are stainless steel (I think) drinking bottles and they have sippy cup style lids too. You can search for that on this forum--sorry I don't have a link.

Have fun getting natural--I'm right there with you and I love the environmental, frugal, self-sustaining, and anti-commercialism example it sets for my daughter! !
