Milk shipping question... X-post from TAO

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I figured this was a good place because we don't have a breastmilk/postal section yet.

I am trying to figure out the logistics of shipping breastmilk (frozen of course.) Here are my questions:

1) How long can I "gather" the milk in my deep freezer before I should ship a batch? I'd like to have enough ounces to make shipping worthwhile, yet not make the mama in need wait too long. How many ounces would make a shipping-worthy package? Would a week be too long a period of time?

2) How many ounces would you all say I should put in a each freezer bag (I use the Gerber seal and go ones - I like that they freeze flat.)

3) Someone please walk me through the actual shipping process:
a. How should I pack it and in what?
b. Do I just bring it to the post office? What type of shipping should I pick? Any special labeling?

I'm a little unclear about shipping w/o using dry ice. Has anyone here had experience with doing that? What type of shipping did you use?

Will I get hassled or need some sort of paperwork if it's labeled as "human milk"?

Thanks in advance - I really appreciate some guidance from those of you who have done this before!!
