I'm so proud of her!

My best friend works as a social worker at a battered womens' shelter. They recently received as a resident a young girl with a six week old baby. The mother had been breastfeeding since the birth until her abuser kidnapped the baby for a week. By the time the child was recovered and returned to his mother, her milk supply had dropped to almost nothing. The shelter does supply formula for babies that are already being bottlefed, and the mom was considering just switching to formula. My friend, who is a lactivist herself with an EBF five month old son, stepped in immediately and talked to her about how important it was for her to nurse her baby, especially considering the stressful situation both of them had been through. She then talked to her about how the mom could increase her milk supply and showed her how to use a sling so the baby could suckle as the mom went about her day. Last I heard, things were going well! Thought I would share with you ladies.

And asking her first how important it was to her to breastfeed was a good start!
