breastfeeding icon

Thread Starter
I lost my previous post while editing. Decided my previous thread appeared to be criticism which I did not mean it to be.

i was actually wondering the same thing myself... except for the second one they just look like mom holding a baby to me!

Two definitely looks like breastfeeding, but it doesn't look like an icon. You wouldn't be able to see that detail from a distance.

Glad they are getting close to a winner though.

I agree! The first one actually looks like a unisex person with a baby in a baby-bjorn carrier to me! I just don't think most people associate bf with holding a baby upright like that. The third one looks like a unisex person just holding a child. I would love to see a bf icon really emphasize breastfeeding, kwim?

The first one is very confusing to me...it looks like someone reading a book!

It confuses me too. If I saw it and didn't know what it was supposed to mean, I would think that it meant either just "babies allowed here" or something about baby bjorn carriers. I am so surprised that an icon that is so ambiguous is winning....

#9 from the original entries was similar to #3 above in that it was easily readable from a distance, but there was a partial circle dividing where the baby's face was and the mother's body, which made it much more clear that baby was at the boob. But it still looked like an icon. They should have taken out all the ones that didn't look like icons and had a run off with all the remaining ones that did.

i think 1 and 2 dont look like icons at all, especially 1. 3 is kind of ambiguous
about the bfeeding, but think about the restroom icons- they dont show someone pooping- they are part of our culture and we know what they mean! i would hope that that is what would happen w/ a breastfeeding icon. also i think it would be more accepted if it looked like other familiar icons (restroom, handicap), which 1 and 2 do not.
Well, 1 and 3 are pictographs which is what the restroom and handicap symbols are.

True, but we know they are restrooms because there is usually a sign saying "RESTROOMS" before you get to the two doors. The symbols on the door are to let us know which gender may enter. I was thrown the first time I saw a family symbol.

I really was torn between 2 and 3. In the end I decided on 2 because I liked that the mom was looking at her baby. It really captures the feelings that come with breastfeeding. #3 could just be someone holding a baby.

I like #3 b/c it fits in with other icons you see, and the little arm sticking up is just what DS does when he nurses.

The icon wouldn't have to be viewed from a distance. This started as something to replace a bottle that was on the sign of some "Mother's Room" in a store. I think it makes more sense for it to look like what it is.

Me too. I can see why restroom icons don't feature graphic bodily functions. Defecation and urnination are bodily functions that our culture does consider private and inappropriate for the public to view. I thought the whole point with this icon was to help normalize bf and show that it need NOT be hidden or private. That is why I am so baffled that an icon that appears to hide (or at least downplay) what is really going on would be in the lead.

Yeah, I had a hard time deciding btw 2 and 3 b/c I liked that 2 showed it was breastfeeding specifically, but 3 looked more like a traditional icon and maybe more people would use it... I was torn, but now I'm just bummed that #1 is winning, my least favorite, lol. It does look like the library symbol we have on cuty street signs around here! Too angular for me.

Interestingly, I just read on another thread that some people had voted for 2 or 3 but their votes had been counted toward option 1. I think they were looking into this. Anyway, the last time I checked, option 2 had pulled into the lead. Maybe they got the glitch straightened out.

They all have good and bad points to me---I think i'm gonna vote for 2.

But i wanted to point something out about number one--- even though it is the least warm and fuzzy of the three (though the head is pointing slightly down) I like it because it could be an older baby nursing.....

sorry--one more thing--i, too think number 2 would be better if simplified by taking out what seems to be an extra line where the shirt if lifted.....oh well.
