Car Sickness

I have not been having the daily nauseousness (did I even spell it close to right??), but I have been having a real problem with car sickness. Anyone else? I sometimes travel with my job, and on the 45 minute drive to the country school I was going to, I had to keep breathing and drinking water. Later, while in the car to go get vitamins, sick feeling again. I guess it is just another reason for dh and I too walk and ride bikes. Riding a bike is ok when your preggo, right?

This is exactly what happens to me. I have a tendency toward motion sickness anyway, but when I'm pg, I can't even ride in a car for 5 minutes without needing to stop. Now, that's only as a passenger. Driving is pretty much fine, unless I'm looking for something in the car or the road is curvy or something. I had totally forgotten about this until it started a few weeks ago, then remembered it happening with my 1st pg. Basically, my poor husband has to be the passenger for the next 7 months!
I think it's not unusual. Just a pain. Good luck and maybe it will subside after a while. I use ginger drops under my tongue to help with the nausea.

It's funny how it's not as bad when you're driving huh? I have the same thing. But DP has motion sickness too so he usually likes to drive. I told him I need to take over the driving for the next 7 mos or so, then he can have it back. I've never had motion sickness before - it must stink having it all the time!

A little ot, but I have to say it SUCKS having motion sickness all the time. There really is no cure for it that doesn't knock you out for 12 hours. This is the biggest disappointment in my life since I LOVE boats and water. I always say that if I didn't get sick, I would have been a sea captain. :

Anyway, back to being pregnant....

I get carsick normally, but it's far worse when I'm pregnant. We've got to drive 7 hours each way for both Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, too. : I really don't like to drive, so DH usually does the bulk of the driving, but this year I think I'll do most of it so I'm not as sick. Poor DH is going to hate that, but he'd hate dealing with a pukey wife even more.

I always drive because I can get sick on a 5 minute drive normally, and I definitely have to drive now. I'm not sure what happens when I'm in labor and DH has to drive! I might have a few problems there. Fortunately, DH loves to ride as it gives him a chance to grade papers and do homework, so he doesn't mind being the passenger all the time!

Can we use those motion sickness wrist bands?
Not PG, but I have severe motion sickness so I thought I might be able to help.

Some things that work for me.
1) Always be in the front seat. I can't sit in the back seat of a car for 5 minutes without turning green.
2) Get that air flowing. Either open the windows or turn the vents on high. Make sure its cool air as well - though it doesn't have to be freezing. If you or other people get cold, well that is what coats and gloves are for.
3) Ginger does help. Ginger Altoids are a particularly easy way to carry ginger around.
4) Never have an empty stomach. It makes things worse. Salty foods are particularly helpful while in transit. I like to start with a good base as well. Generally a sandwich is a good bet.
5) Soda helps too.
6) I have a device called a Relief Band. It sends an electrical pulse through your wrist every few seconds. I can actually sometimes get away with just using this and avoid taking my hard-core meds. Seriously, it was one of the best purchases I ever made. They are rather expensive though. They specific recommend this device for pregnant women so I'm pretty sure its safe - but obviously you shouldn't just take my word for that.

I also have some very strong and heavily regulated medication that I take. But its not safe during PG so I'm leaving that off the list.

Wrist bands are fine to use, but they've never helped me. If you don't usually get motion sickness then they may work for you.

I thankfully have not had this with this pregnancy but with my DD I could not drive my car because it made me so sick to my stomach and I was already naseous! DH said that it could have something to do with the rake of the windshield...if that makes any sense!
