BPP/Induction scheduled for next week

Hello all!!
Sooo I went to my dr. appointment today. Baby seems to be doing well.*YAY* Heart-Rate was 147-154.
My Dr. scheduled an induction for next Friday (nov 10th). I hafta call the hospital at 0630 am that day and make sure they have a bed.
He also ordered a "biophysical profile" for Wed. Nov 8th- He put on the req. to confirm position and fetal wellbeing.
Has anyone had one of those done before?? I will be 41 weeks pregnant the day I go for that test.
I am sooo excited for next week to come.

Oh and what is "cervidil"? That is the form of induction my dr. likes to use. is that different than the drip??
Looking for words of wisdom from mama's who have been induced before.
I am hoping baby comes naturally without needing to be induced.
The head is as far down as it can go-its in position. Just need the labor to begin!!

You were just due yesterday, why are they already scheduling an induction?

I was scheduled to be induced twice. Both times my water broke hours before I was to go to the hospital. I wish you the same such luck. The baby will come when it is ready to come. Often inducing before it is ready causes complications and leads to C-sections. Good luck.

He wants to induce me then because he worries about loss of placental function after 41 1/2 weeks.
I am not objecting with him. I read alot about mama's who say to let it come out when its ready. but I am trusting my dr. and he is just doing whats best for me. I am obese (I currently weigh 324 lbs...so the more weight i gain the greater risk to getting diabetes and stress on my heart).
I dunno...I am just going with the flow.
I am not overly upset that I am being induced.
I know that there is always the risk of having to get a c/s....
I will just see how things go.

What the heck is going on in Canada with the worry about loss of placental function so damn early!

I had an induction...with my ds. You really don't want to hear how it went compared to my first birth but I will say the experience the primary reason I am having a home birth this time.

I am praying you go into labor on your own before next Friday so that you can avoid a similar situation!

Not from your ddc, but I wanted to answer a couple of your questions. I have had a BPP, and where as I don't recommend having it done, it can be reasurring and keep you from stressing. Basically they are checking baby size, checking to see if the baby is "practice breathing", if the placenta still looks like it is functioning like it is supposed to.

Cervadil is an induction method that is like a cream or something put on the cervix to soften it up and to help stimulate contractions. The thing about it though is that it can bring on contractions that are very intense and contractions that come to fast. If you need to be induced, I would see if you have any other options, even pitocin is preferable from what I have heard. Take care and *gentle labor vibes* headed your way.

Just wanted to chime in with my good wishes and labor vibes and put a few ideas out there.

First, cervadil is a prostoglandin, an artificial hormone that softens and thins the cervix. It is inserted into the vagina (in my case it was a packet about the size of a Today Sponge, if you remember those). You have to be monitored for a little while at first, but later on you can be freed up to walk around. If you are induced this way, I would definitely get up and wander the halls a bit so be prepared with a robe and slippers. Talk with your doc beforehand about all this. The other synthetic hormone often used is Pitocin, an artificial hormone delivered by IV that simulates oxytocin. Pitocin may also be used to augment labor.

Second, if you are scheduled for an induction, I would consider trying an alternative induction technique such as acupuncture beforehand. There are other options out there as well. And, of course, many people say sex helps!

Hopefully, you will go into labor and none of this will be an issue. GL, mama!!

Thanks!!! Its helpful to have support and advice from you all.
I didn't ask him what methods are available for induction. But when the secretary phoned the hospital to book me in, they asked what he prefers to use and he said "cervidil". Bleh..I am a chicken of pain. So I hope this isn't too much for my body to handle (the whole painful cxn's)..
I reallly pray i go into labor before then.
to myself....Heh.
I am feeling alot of cervical zingers tonite sooo maybe the baby wants out.
*giggles*

I remember hearing dangers of that drug, but can't remember...
Get some Evening primrose oil capsules--pierce them and insert...softens cervix...also sex sex sex...basically progesterone au natural! And nipple stimulation...
Your body sounds ready..so I think those things should work!

I'm not sure if things are different in the US but my doula told me that if they use cervidil they can even send you home because you don't really need much monitoring. With pitocin you have to have an IV and be monitored. Also if your water is broken you have a limited amount of time to start contracting and then you will have to be given pitocin which can have much more intense contractions. Also they can use something called Cytotec which actually isn't approved for use vaginally in the US but it is used here anyway.. I would try to avoid this as my doula said it can cause uterine ruptures. The natural methods I have heard about are sex(semen has prostaglandins(sp) in it that stimulate labor), long walks, spicy foods, and shrimp. Apparently shrimp has prostaglandins also. Also diarhhea(sp) can stimulate labor which is why I think they reccommend spicy foods.

Cervidil is different than the above mentioned drug.

Anyways, some of you may know that I posted on the I'm Pregnant page about induction and "some" of the replies (114 of them total) were pretty harsh and very scary to me being a first time mama...
So i think i'll just let this subject go.
And let it get bumped to the previous page. So don't worry about replying.
thnx.:

I think you need to read them all, as a first time mom, I found many of them very helpful and there is actually some good research there.

The moms there are not trying to scare you... they are just telling the truth..

but yes I agree.. sometimes the truth is scary....

Glad to hear it's cervidil instead of the other one...
Yes--I know this can be scary--we always WANT to believe the medical professionals...but remember that many of us have been in your shoes--had things happen--and THEN realized that they could've been prevented. We would like to help others NOT go thru some of these things. I know these moms only want the best possible birth for you!
