my sweet bfing granny

my sweet grandma, aged 86, finnaly got a chance to meet the baby nammed after her mother, my daughter Alma Louise. I have never discussed much with her about babies, but this day was special. My grandmother lost four children as infants, three who never came home and one who was 6 weeks. Being a 'tough Sweed', granny was kind, but never showed much emotion. As I nusred my Alma, she gazed longingly at us, and with a tear in her eye said "Isnt that the most wonderful thing in the world?". It opened up the chance for her to tell me about her births, her babies and best of all, her nursing them. We sat on the couch for a long time and she never took her eyes off my breasts and my baby, and never wiped the awesome grin off her face.

oh, and if youve never asked your gran about her birth stories, do it! even if you have a real mean granny.. I hope that in 60 years I will be able to sit on the other side of the couch and remember this special time. In my experience the older set loves nothing more than responding to genuine inquiries about their past. I think it keeps the passion alive.

my gramma never breastfed, and really gave my mom a lot of grief about it (she is my dad's mom) but I know she loves to talk about her birth stories because she has told me about the twins SO many times. I really should ask her about the births of her other kids (she has 6).

That is so amazing!!

This summer we went to visit my grandparents and I asked all of them (well all of my family members because I'm a birth junkie) their birth stories. I wrote all of it down to pass on for furture generations. Some absolutely amazing stories!

That is such a cool story! When my grandma came out to see DD after she was born, she was perplexed by my refusal to put the baby down, cosleeping, and breastfeeding. She made a comment along the lines of "my mother did all that stuff, but I thought we learned better since then."

Poor Grandma bought into the Dr. Spock mentality. I explained about Attachment Parenting, and she tried to defend herself, saying she was attached to her girls. Mom, whose strongest memories of maternal attachment involve helping hide beer cans from her stepdad, sided with me!
