In other recent news:

Between March 2005 and September 2006, 17 people who developed GBS within six weeks of receiving the [meningitis] vaccine. Fifteen of those were 11 to 19 years old.

funny how we're in atlanta and haven't heard anything about a shortage. but then again we don't have a child in school or watch much tv. i thought babies 0-5 or 6 months were at highest risk anyway. why would they start recommending it for those 11 yo-college freshmen?

Well can't we all sleep better at night now.

Anyone ever notice how a "shortage" in the US means that there isn't a surplus?

mamacatsbaby - I think you are thinking of the prevnar vax - a different meningitis vax.

ever noticed how your baby only "needs" the vaccine if it's available? when my oldest was a baby ( we did vax then ) they were out of two vaccines at her 4 month check up.. then one of those and another at her 6 month and another one at her 12 month check up. when i asked if that was a problem it was "nah.. she'll be fine. babies never get these illnesses anyway and if for some reason she does, they are all treatable" and "no big deal. she's healthy and strong". i don't remember which vaxes they were.. it was years ago.. but still.. they acted like it was nothing.

fast forward four years to this baby whom we do not vaccinate and doctors FREAK out about even delaying.. saying that she will DIE if she doesn't get them and NOW.

things that make you go hmmmmm..

Darn. I was hoping to use the "there's no vaccine left!!" excuse to protect my own children from the vaccine. Looks like I'll have to think of something else.

i should use less pronouns. i meant that aren't the 0-5or 6 mo supposed to be the highest at riskfor meningitis. what's with the push for a meningitis vax for older kids. crying babe, gotta run... :

Have no fear . . . Menactra's indication age will be lowered to two years of age very very soon.

See the first row (MCV4):

By the way, they're also conducting meningococcal vaccine trials on infants . . . then the indication age will be lowered again. Then it will be mandated for daycare/preschool/kindergarten entry --- and there's how they increase vaccine compliance folks.
