I am curious about palm oil in general, too. When dh was in military (for Singapore), they used it for everything from brushing their teeth to cleaning their guns. My Ils claim it is very healthy, but I have only used limited amount of it. Spectrum's shortening was all palm oil and it worked alright for pie crusts, but I am jus not sure of the health value. I am totally clueless about the tropical traditions- though.

i just read research saying that its vit e content is more complete than any other source. Its also used in africa for malnutrition bc the red virgin oil is high in vit a. the trop trads website has a summary of all the professional sites i read.
that's cool what you said about when you were in singapore. Its neat to hear how the rest of the world lives.

I haven't used it too much. Some people in my chapter LOVE it. I use it with a comb of coconut oil to make french fries. Also for popcorn. Stir fries, etc. It does make EVERYTHING redish, so in order to prevent raised eyebrows from dh, I try to make it with dark colored things. But my kids loved the french fries I made with them and didn't care about the color. They probably thought they were sweet potatoes. I've also done eggs with them, but I really like mine in coconut oil, so I'm sticking with that.

We have Nigerian friends who use palm oil for stews and frying their meat. To me it taste delicious with meats and stews, but I don't know about with other things. It is really red like the pp stated. But it is very popular in african cooking, frying, etc. We have a bottle of it that we purchased from an international market and it has a strong flavor (but I'm sure different brands vary).

What's the strong flavor? Can it be compared to anything?

To me it has a certain flavor, not bad or anything like that but just distinctive (hard to describe). I like it, but then again it probably depends on the brand.
