Night sky playsilk?

Has anyone dyed a silk like this?

How would you do it? I just ordered some blanks and am planning on using Koolaid. So excited, it'll be fun even if I just do solid colors, but this would be neat.

Thanks!

I'm not sure how I would do that with kool-aid, but with silk-painting dyes & paints it would be easy. Start with a yellow-dyed scarf, paint resist wherever you want it to stay yellow, then dye/paint it blue. All these supplies can be ordered at Dharma Trading co. - it might not make it real cheap, though.

Nope, scratch that - too complicated. I would dye a scarf a dark blue, then take gold fabric paint (tons of kinds out there - try to find the most permanent and the softest hand - check Dharma if you're obsessive, hit a chain craft shop if you're not) and paint on stars, moons, etc.

Much easier, much cheaper.

I see... yeah, I was thinking it would be kind of complicated. I think we may go with an 'unstarry' night silkie... ie all dark blue! LOL

No, wait! You inspired me, so I threw a silk in a blue dyebath. It ought to be dry tonight, and I'll let you know how the painting goes.

(Me, obsessively curious? Of course!)

Wilton's cake decorating colors in Violet makes a wonderful deep blue when you use enough paste. I've always thought it would be perfect for a night sky silk.

Ooo, post a picture!

When I figure out how to post a pic, I will.

The painting looks great - a very slightly mottled blue scarf, and I had some Jaquard Lumiere Bronze acrylic fabric paint lying around. Fifteen minutes, and I had a night sky scarf. And could have done at least 30 more - it hardly took any paint at all. It looks beautiful. I might have preferred gold paint, but still...

This is the paint:

All the metallics, especially, are beautiful. It's not like glitter glue; it's lovely and shiny, like real copper.

Here are the pics!

And it was really, really easy, except for the stars - the stencils I made were kinda sloppy. I would have preferred gold, but I didn't have that around. If you spend the money you would have spent on the boughten silk for supplies, then you can make as many as you would like for presents in the future....

Great job! Where did you get the silk blank? Did you have to.....hem.it? I've hemmed silk...tedious. I was skeptical at the top of this thread about the night sky silk. We have the Sarah's silk one, but admire yours! Character and LOVE!

what kind of dye did you use? Is there a way to dye a silk and then save the dye for some later date when you want to dye something else? Trying to be frugal, here.
