My intactivist moment

I sent the following email to my insurance company:

Purpose:
Other (Problem/Issue not addressed in any of
above selections or multiple issues involved)

Issue:
I am writing to encourage Tricare to discontinue funding of routine neonatal male circumcision. The American Academy of Pediatrics position statement on circumcision states that the potential medical benefits do not justify routine circumcision of all infants. Many private insurance companies, and in many states Medicaid, have already stopped paying for routine infant circumcision. Tricare could save thousands of dollars each year by discontinuing funding for this unnecessary procedure.
The reply I received simply said "Thank you for your input, I will forward this to my supervisor." The reply was from an actual person's name at Tricare, not some automated response line, so I hope that is a good sign.

I haven't heard anything since. It has only been 2 weeks, so hopefully I'll get a better response soon.

I dont mean to be pessimistic, but the fact that the e-mail had a name doesnt mean that it was a real person. was there a phone number as well? 2 weeks having passed is not a good sign.

I would try sending a paper letter instead.

Why do you think a paper letter would be more effective? (I hate that tone of voice does not come across on the net, but I am asking a sincere, honest question, not a snarky one.)

Well, email is easy.... so if we can get more Tricare subscribers to do this too, THAT will make a big impact.

Nice and to the point!

Quasi-Intactivist Moment

My dad and I are standing in line at KFC to order, when we see an obviously pregnant lady and the baby's father (? he had her arms around her) waiting for her order to come. I hear the cashier ask how far along she and she says 29 weeks. I'm kicking myself for not having brought my jacket where I keep my no circ button (the letter "C" and the word "IRCUMCISION" behind a red circle with a slah through it). I'm feeling a little shy and whisper to my dad I wish I had my button, but say nothing directly to the couple.

They leave with their order and I say to my dad in normal voice, I wish I had my no circumcision button and mention the pregnant lady so I could at least make her notice it, so they'd think. The cashier was kind of interested in our conversation and my dad mentions that I'm against circumcision and to make the conversation clearer, mentions I'm against male circumcision as a human rights cause. I say yes because it's an unnecessary procedure and I wish I had my button with me and say I hope they see the bumper sticker on our car. The female cashier said now she understood what I meant.

So, while I didn't educate the intended "target", I kind of put the message out there that it's something to think about.
