water breaking...

Ok,so this is (again) probably a really stupid question, but something I read on another thread in this group made me think about it. Someone commented on having her water break while peeing... so... how do you know when your water breaks? I mean, does it feel different from urinating?

If it's the whole shebang, yes - it's very different (mine broke when I was getting out of bed to go pee - it was a big gush and it kept going as I got up - so I knew I didn't just wet my pants!). If it's just the forewaters, however, you might just wonder where "all that" pee was hiding - especially if you're at the 3-4 Tbs per bathroom trip stage now.

If you think your water broke, it doesn't hurt to check to make sure with your midwife or doctor. But it's only something like 10-15% of moms whose water breaks before contractions really get going.

Does that help?

I learned that you can stop pee using kegels but you can't stop your water from leaking or gushing!

My Sears pregnancy book says only about 10% of women have their water break. I always thought that it was how you knew you were in labor-especially since my mother's water broke with both her pregnancies. My friend's water didn't break so much as leak. She kept going to the bathroom and complaining about leaking so much.

I just figure it's something that you'll just "know" if it happens.

With DS I had the slow trickle forwaters effect. You can tell. To be graphic: feel it. If you rub between your fingers or along your leg it is more slippery than pee. Smell it, it doesn't smell like pee. And if you are still unsure, taste it! Yep, then you'll know it isn't pee. If it is just a little trickle, it can often reseal itself (mine did). So don't let anyone put you on the 24 hour til infection rule. And even after it breaks, your body still continues producing AF, so you won't ever be "dry."

I've been feeling a lot more moisture for th epast two days.. but I wasn't sure if it was perhaps my body just creating more secretions or if perhaps there was a slow leak... I'm probably just paranoid, but I may have to call the MW today just to make myself feel better about it.

Thanks for asking I was wondering the same thing. I did ask my OB this week because I am having alot of dampness and incontinence. He said that because you get so engorged in your vagina it pushes on your glands and you do have an increation in discharge and secreations. He told me not to worry that it is my water breaking unless I soak my underwear and keep leaking!
