Wow. Independant Lens produced the story of the song "Strange Fruit", sung by Billie and written by Abel Meeropol aka Lewis Allen. The song about lynching in the south that was banned on many radio stations but still managed to climb the popular record charts, this in the late 1930's! The man who wrote it, was a Jewish American who was socially active, ended up adopting the Rosenberg children after their parents were executed. The adoption was arranged by W.E.B. DuBois. Of course all of the people involved w/the song were brought before the House commission for "unamerican activities"! Sound familiar Dixie Chicks? This was an amazing story, anyone else see it?
