April 2003 Mamas and Babes! - Page 11

Hi all. Well, Cosette cut her first tooth last week and her second tooth yesterday. I can't believe that she already has two teeth!!! Louis didn't get any until 7 months. But I'm glad to see that she's not alone here... So for you moms of babes with teeth, have you started to do anything for their teeth (cleaning wise)? I don't remember if I did anything with Louis or not. She's obviously just on breastmilk so I'm assuming that can't do much damage but am not sure. Any advice?

We're currently working on potty training Louis. He's two and a half. He has been doing really well (we've just switched him to underwear during the day) though he has had a few accidents. Man, is potty training a whole new world...

So between my adorable active little Cosette and my potty training toddler, I have been really busy. Busy, but having a blast as usual. I LOVE MY KIDS!!!

Hi everyone,

My dd was born on 4-16-03, I just discovered this thread. She's rolling a lot now, teething like crazy but with out cutting yet, and also using each hand for different activities, if she is holding a toy and you offer her something new, she will use her other hand with out loosing her grip. She wants me to help her sit down thousand times a day, and loves to "feel" that she is standing up. In her last Doctor's appointment she was 12.5 pounds and the best thing... she smiles the whole day!!
Wasn't April a wonderful time to have a baby??
Yes, April was a perfect time to have a baby.

I'm glad to read that other sweet babies are also teething. My parents thought we were nuts when we thought that Carly is starting. She's drooling up a storm and can't put enough fingers in her mouth. And then there are the bouts of unexplained crankiness. We just keep giving her teething things to chew on and hope the teeth come in soon. There's certainly something going on in there.

Carly's still not rolling over regularly but loves to stand! She'll stand up for anyone that'll hold her. She sits on my lap at the desk and then lift herself up to lean on the desk. I'm amazed at how strong she is.

Have any of you started on solids/cereal yet? I know we're getting close. DD is starting to get hungry a little more often again so I don't think that breastmilk is satisfying her like it used to. Our Ped gave us the speech on what to do if we start to try cereal before our next appointment at 6 months. I definitely want to wait another two weeks until she's officially 5 months old.

Have a safe 3 day weekend!

hockeylover~ Your DD may be having a growth spurt. That will happen for years to come for children. We didn't ever give cereal to our first. He was exclusively BF'd until 10 months. We also plan on doing the same this time too.

my sweet ds always seems to be nursing as well. i am not planning on introducing solids until he shows more of an interest and definitely am planning to wait until he is 6 months.

does anyone else have a baby who favors one side? the last few days he has absolutely refused the other breast. he has never liked it but i could usually convince him to take it occassionally. i read somewhere (i think dr sears) that if they did this to just let them go to the favored side. i know that the nipple is shaped differently and the milk doesn't flow out as fast. the thing is i work and i pump both sides. should i just stop pmping that side? i think he has been left hungry the last couple of days--he has been really fussy and has been nursing constantly (i've been home with him the last few days.) he hasn't been running out of pumped milk--but maybe that is because i pump both sides? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!
This is what I think. Maybe it could be alot of different things such as, teething, stress, gas. I have never pumped but I think you should continue pumping to keep that supply up in case he decides to nurse on that side again. I mean try to offer it and if he wants the other side give it to them like the book suggest. I have known a few women who have exclusively nursed their babies with only one side. Esp. if he is taking a bottle you might want to keep that side nice a full too. Your milk will make more no matter what because it is supply and demand. Good for you mama, pumping for your baby!!! Another April baby

Hey Mommas...

Another april momma here, my DS, J.B. was born 4-10-03.
He is such a character! He is so funny, he loves to make the razzberry sound, and he flaps his arms up and down when he's excited. When he smiles it takes up his whole face! His giggles melt our hearts
At his 4 month check up he was 17lb7oz, 26 inches. So, I'm sure he's at least 18lbs now! WOW. They grow fast! Hes sooo strong too, has been since he was a newborn. He also loves to "stand up", and can roll over both ways...although he doesn't go all the way over often. JB is also continueing to get over his colicky start, and rarely crys.
He's also sleeping better, he still wakes up at least 3 times a night but I notice him stirring and the settling himself more often. My guess is reading the NCSS helped, along with his maturing. Now I just need to learn to sleep though his restless sleeping.
I noticed JB was very intrested in our food/drinks, so I'm slowly starting solids, and yes I did start with rice ceral, because I figured when it's mixed with my BM it would be a good start for him flavor wise. I started with a soupy TBLS a few nights ago, and he loved it! I'm also offering water, and watered down pear juice, in both a bottle and a trainer cup. (he really doesn't know how to use either, but he gets a few drops ) Everything seems to be going good, he gets excited when I put him in the bouncy chair after his bath, cause he knows it's time to eat. So far solids have not even changed his poopies. I plan on taking it nice and slow, and maybe starting veggies and fruit closer to 6 months.
JB must be teething as well and getting close to cutting, as I can feel a ridge on his gums. He chews his hands, momma and daddies hands, and anything else that strikes his fancy, and drools like crazy!
I have been enjoying reading this thread, and look forward to hearing more about all the april mommas and babies

hi kathryn!

i've noticed my ds starting to look at our food too but i haven't broken down to give him anything yet--but i have been very tempted. mine was born 4/23/03.

how big was your ds at birth? mine was 6 lbs l2 oz and was 13 lbs 11 oz at his 4 month check up. your baby is HUGE compared to mine! i love being a mommy though. he is so awesome and i am so in love with him!
Hi all! I accidentally unsubscribed from all my threads awhile back and so I didn't realize everyone was posting. :

Anyway, Jeremy weighed an even 15lbs at his 4mo visit (7lb 7oz at birth). Dd didn't weigh that much until about 9mo old! :LOL I love our ped. visits because we're not vaxing, so it's always positive... he looks great, keep doing what you're doing, etc... and no tears!

He can roll over from his tummy or his back, but usually just rolls onto his side and chews on his fat little fists. Sometimes it seems like he'll be sitting up anyday. When he has tummy time he moves those arms and legs so much that I think someday he'll start crawling without realizing what's happening. His favorite thing to do is stand so if you're holding him you have to let him stand. Because he likes standing, the exersaucer works well for those times when I need to set him down... He also loves the sling when we're out and about but only in the kangaroo position unless he's sleepy when we do the chest to chest. He still hates to be swaddled down in the sling. LOL I bought an Ergo carrier and we'll try that out in a couple of weeks. It says 5mo and up, but ds has a really strong back/torso.

He is totally in love with dd, it is so wonderful to see him playing with her.

He's still teething, but no teeth cut yet (dd was 6.5mo). We're not starting solids... despite the fact that he's a big boy, I know my milk supply will increase as needed so we're not introducing solids at this point. I kinda think rice cereal is a waste (please don't take this wrong if you use it!)... with my dd it didn't make her nurse any less and was kinda a pain. I tried jarred/homemade pureed and strained fruits and veggies but she didn't care for those either. We really just waited until she was able to eat table food. I rather liked it that way. It did help that she had all her teeth except molars at 14mo (and yes, we were still nursing) and got her molars shortly after 18mo. If ds gets his teeth later, we will probably need to do more pureed or strained veggies but at this point my plan is to delay as much as possible.

Sorry to be so wordy!

Hey... I'm been browsing the Dental boards scouting for a few things (I have a couple surface cavities- my first! ) and I've noticed that a lot of babies that like to nurse all night were getting cavities... do a search in the archives.

At this point, I think swabbing their mouths out with a cloth is all that's needed- at least that's what my ped recommends. My ds doesn't have any teeth yet and we're not doing anything. I'm going to try to start regular tooth care earlier this time.

Thankfully, my 2.5yo's teeth seem to be okay so far (pearly white anyway) and I didn't start regular brushing until she had several teeth. Of course, she got her first tooth at 6mo and had 14 teeth at 14mo too.
i am bad. i keep thinking about that tooth care thing but haven't done it yet. anywho my ds is enjoying flipping over and standing (w/ assistance of course), is nursing happily and is learning how to take his diaper off.

the greatest thing is when i come home and get that wonderful smile of adoration. man, just melts my heart everytime.

My DS was 8 lbs 11 oz, at birth, and 8lbs2oz when we went home after my c-section. So basically he already had a couple pounds on your DS. Everyone is still surprised at how big he's gotten and how fast, he was 13 Lbs 12 oz at 2 months!
Of course, I'm not exactly tiny, and DH is 6'4" and over 300# :

Also, I wanted to add about the cereal, I know rice cereal isn't the #1 best choice for infant food, but that said, right now all I really want to do is introduce solids. I want to keep nursing him as much as I have been, and the cereal is sort of a trainer for me, you know, get him used to the texture changes, and the use of a spoon, besides it's so cute that he took to it so well, I think he was ready.

i will probably try the rice cereal myself because i can so easily mix it with bm. but, we shall see. i am planning on doing a mixture of mashed up table foods and baby foods--i understand that the texture is a big issue but i think that being away from home may make it a little difficult to ensure that i am balancing his meals effectively.

well, back to tummy time. have a great labor day everyone!

My dd is already eating some rice cereal and she loves it, she likes very much the thicker texture and enjoys so much touching it and getting her face totally messy

Hello All,
Hope everyone is doing good. How are all those (almost) 5 month olds?
My DS, J.B. has a new pair of shoes, his first. We took him to the mall the other day to use the stroller (the first time we've used it!)
He actually loved the stroller, and was very relaxed for the couple hours we were at the mall. He only fussed when we stopped pushing for to long, and while we ate at the food court, I took him out and held him while I ate, as usual :rollseyes
Besides trying out the stoller, we also wanted to get DS some shoes. I orginally wanted to get him some soft soled ones, like shooshoos, but couldn't find a retailer in my area, and also didn't know if I wanted to spend 20+ dollars online on shoes I had only seen pictures of. Anyway, I found some BabyKeds on sale, down from $19 to only 8 bucks, and they were the softess size 3 I could find, so I got them. They look SOOOO CUTE! They're navy blue, with a little flag on the tounge. They will go with about 95% of his fall/winter clothes.
Even though they're adorable, he won't be wearing these everyday, or for very long at a time. I'm sure there won't be a problem with his feet being constricted. I'll just continue to keep him barefoot, or in socks around the house.
Maybe his next shoes will be more like the shooshoos, I'd like his walking shoes to be very soft so he has the advantage of his natural balance at all times.

Also, some not so nice news, we have a cold. Ds and I both. stuffy noses, a slight cough, aches and for DS, poor sleep. I'm hoping its not one of those colds that drags out for a week or two. I feel a little bit better today, (and I hope JB does too) so keep your fingers crossed for us that we'll be better by the weekend.

Hope to hear from you all

I just wanted to say that we our Buskins. They are made in Australia. We have four pairs in various sizes and they are wonderful. I actually found a tiny little shop 1/2 hour away that sells them so I was able to see before I bought. Then I arranged a co-op here at MDC and we got them for $17.60 each. They're all leather or suede and no padding etc. In ds' current size we have the cute boat shoes.

Hi all. Well, Cosette is 5 months old TODAY!!! She is going to crawl any day. She constantly postions herself on all fours and rocks, and those rocks are getting stronger and stronger. She has rocked and propelled her knees forward on occasion but she still can't get a handle on moving those hands forward. Though she wants to so I imagine it is only a short matter of time.

Cosette is very interested in watching us eat but I plan on holding off solids for a while still. At least six months...

busybusymomma -- I am very interested in what you said about putting off solids until they were ready to go immediately to table food? I would worry about them not being able to deal with the textures? Was there any of that with you? Is there any validity to having to start with pureed food for a while to teach them little texture at a time?

Cosette sounds like such a big girl! They're growing too fast!...

I said that because for the most part it worked for us because dd had her first tooth at 6.5mo and had 14 teeth at 14 months old. Had her molars shortly after 18mo. We did do a bit of rice cereal then switched to oatmeal and mixed cereal. Once she was nine months old I started feeding her Organic Baby Muesli. We didn't do much cereal and ended up throwing a lot of the Gerber away because it went bad. I should say, she only really ate the cereal at my mom's house while I was at work (I worked 4 hours shifts, 4 days/week) because she started refusing bottles of ebf at 9mo. At home, I really only bf her and occassionally offered her jarred food. Because she had so many teeth, we were able to do lots of table foods. At first it was just tiny bites of mashed potatoes and things like that. I remember my dad feeding her clam chowder at 9mo when we vacationed on Mackinac Island. I about had a cow!

how soon ds teeths will determine how we introduce solids this time around. That was the nice thing about dd having so many teeth so early. If he doesn't have as many teeth, I'll steam and puree fruits and veggies and freeze them in ice cube trays just to introduce a few flavors.

So far, I have a chunky monkey who loves boob... yes, he watches us while we eat but it's the same way he watches us while we do anything! He leans way forward when dd runs by, you can just tell he wants to follow! :LOL

She sounds good!

Jeremy was 15lbs a month ago, we don't get weighed again until Oct 24.
No teeth yet, but he had some whiteish spots on his gums (not thrush! LOL) and he is constantly cramming both fists in his mouth and chomping. Anything but boob gets chomped on when it goes in his mouth.
He's getting closer to sitting up alone, he can do it with just a tiny bit of support
We're still ebf'ing too. He does the gag reflex thing if you put anything in his mouth on his tongue... he does love chewing on fingers though!
