cervical exam and extreme pain

I had my 39 week check today and my mw did a cervical exam which was so extremely painful I couldn't handle it. It was really, really, really painful on the right side and I don't know why. She said that she did see some yeast and suggested that I get a 3 day monistat treatment to see if it helps. I'm really confused and a bit frustrated I've never had a painful exam before. Uncomfortable yes but not painful. Should I be worried that it could something else or does this sound like a yeast infection? I haven't had an itching problem but some burning. Thanks, Katie

If the pain was on the vaginal wall then I would say that it's possible for it to be a yeast infection. Remember, everything is exaggerated when you're pregnant... ALL symptoms. If the pain was on the cervix, it could be that it's maturing and therefore it's more likely to be painful. I know my exams normally do not hurt but are on the uncomfortable side.... however with my last two exams, they did hurt quite a bit... especially this last one. My doctor said it's because my cervix is soft and has moved forward. Sorry I don't have more info for you... but I hope this helps.

like PP said everything is so exaggerated-- including sensations. so not only do you have more juices, more swelling, etc, but you have more sensation. Some women do get to the end of pregnany with extremely sensitive yonis. I've done exams on women who did not appear to have any yeast but nearly flew off the bed during the exam. If you've had burning and she saw yeast, go ahead and do the treatment-- you don't want to get any closer to the birth with that :

one more question: was your midwife doing anything else other than checking it? was she stretching it (stripping the membranes)?

sending your yoni some good vibes LOL

not in your ddc but wanted to reply... i had the same problem in the last week or so of my pregnancy. to the point that i could not tolerate being checked in labor. the pain was indescribable! i dont think i had a yeast infection though. according to my midwife some women have an inordinate number of nerve cells in their cervix (most woman have none) and this in combo with a ripening cervix can cause great amounts of pain during an exam. she also said that woman with a history of sexual abuse can have this painful reaction as well.

in my case, neither yeast nor abuse were to blame. so maybe i just have alot of nerves?

anyway, dont know if that helps you but i thought iwould pass that info along.

Thanks you guys it was really unnerving to be in so much pain. The pain was on the inside wall of my yoni, I don't think it was the cervix. I kept thinking "go the the left". The mw could barely get her fingers in there so I don't think she was stretching it or stripping membranes. Its good to know that you guys have felt the same way. I was getting a bit discouraged thinking what in the %$$%^ could this be!
I think I'll go ahead and do the treatment to see if it helps. Thanks
