My ds will be 3 June 3rd, the day he also begins school at a Montessori here in town. I'm looking for a good children's book to read to him which will introduce the concept of school, since it will be completely foreign to him. Any suggestions? Even something like, Elmo goes to School would be fine, if there were such a thing. Thanks for any recommendations!

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

"The Kissing Hand" is probably a little too advanced, but a wonderful book to have for the future if not now! A little raccoon is going off to school for the first time. He and his mother work out a kissing hand ritual (they each put a kiss on each other's hand) to keep each other's love near to them while they are apart. It's geared more for k-garten, but you might be able to adapt it to your child's level.
I'll look around and see if I can think of anything else.

I secong The Kissing Hand, I buy this book as a going to school gift for all my friends children. I think it is mostly for dealing with the seperation of going to school. Also Golden books has a book called I am Going to Kindergarten and the little girl goes through her whole day and then comes home and plays school with her little brother and dog.Franklin the Turtle has a book about going to school on the first day.

Usborne First Experiences' "Going to School" has our 3 year old daughter very excited about going to school when she's older.

There is a going to school book by the Ahlbergs, who also wrote The Jolly Postman. I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me, but it is a nice book about the structure of school. It is a British book, so some of the terminology might seem odd to a North American child. Also, it is about all-day school, so it might be more suitable for an older child.

We have an adorable Board Book called At Preschool With Teddy Bear by Jaqueline McQuade. The illustrations are absolutely adorable and soft, simple text, just a great book.

My son (almost 3, too) wants to go to school after watching "Timothy Goes to School" on TV. "Mummy, I want to go to school on a school bus all by myself!" This show is based on books by Rosemary Wells. They follow different characters all in the same class so it covers allot of different school-related issues.

We like the Kissing Hand, but also like Oh, My Baby Little One. It is more about separating from Mom, but the pictures throughout the text show a young child going through a preschool program (actually a day care).
At 6, this is DD's favorite book. She is really finally able to understand the concept that momma's love doesn't disapppear just because momma does.

I'm not a fan of the "What to Expect" series of pregnancy and child care books, but the same authors have a series of first experiences books that are really excellent, and while they might be a bit advanced, you can always paraphrase and adapt. I own the one called "What to Expect at Preschool" and it is great. It has a question and answer on each page, such as, "Will Mommy or Daddy stay with me at school?" and, "What if I get hungry or have to go to the bathroom?"
Here's a link at amazon, and there are other books about starting school listed on the page:
