OK -how contagious is Flumist?

I dropped my younger son at school today and one of his classmates came in bragging about how she got the flu shot yesterday and her little brother (who was wandering around the class touching everything) got the 'special mist'. My son has a very delicate immune system - and he is in an inclusion class with several disabled students who are immunocompromised...didn't the person spraying the mist into that little boy tell the mom to keep him away from immunocompromised people for up to 21 days? why is he in that classroom the day after the 'mist'? and worst of all - WHY couldn't I speak up and say something to one of the teachers - at least voice my concern, instead of just leaving my vulnerable son and other students in the classroom and going to work?? anyone know how likely it is to catch the flu from someone who has just gotten Flumist?

Exactly how contagious it really is hasn't been studied very well. But it definitely is contagious, and those recently vaccinated ARE supposed to be kept away from the immunocompromised.

From the insert:

Due to the possible transmission of vaccine virus, vaccine recipients or their parents/guardians should be advised that vaccine recipients should avoid
close contact (e.g., within the same household) with immunocompromised individuals for at least 21 days.

Well, this says only if they're living with them.
So technically I guess they didn't do anything wrong.

oh - thank you. I hadn't seen the 'living with' criteria. uggh...it always shocks me when I find out someone actually went to the doc to get this vaccine..

you didnt know that there were no risks from the flu vax or flu mist? why tell a parent or patient about risks when flu mist is perfectly safe???

if i was a parent of one of the immunocompromised kids and found out that my child's classmate got flumist, i would be PISSED! not sure what i would do to not come across as a non-vaxing wacko though. (i'm a substitute teacher, and let me tell you, teachers definately gossip about the parents!)

seems like when fully vaxed kids go to the dr, the dr asks if the kids are around any nonvaxed kids because those kids are just germ carriers... but they never ask the parents *getting* the vaxes for their kids about any of these risk factors.
