I dont know if this is the right forum or not. Please feel free to move. Ive been thinking of checking in the whole World of Warcraft thing (fyi I AM aware that people get addicted to it )
How does it work? Do you get the software and install it? Are there monthly fees as well? Its an MMORPG right? Do you HAVE to play with people all the time?
Fill me in please!
TIA!

DH and I have gamed online for years, starting with EverQuest and playing about 20 games before resting on WoW.

You buy the game, install it on your computer and when you click on the icon, it connects you with their servers. You create an account and can make new characters on hundreds of Servers (or Realms, in WoW). You get into the actual game and can play by yourself, or group with others to defeat harder tasks.

WoW is very quest oriented. Read your manual on how to do quests. You can easily get to 60 without grouping, or grouping very little. You can also join guilds, which can help you with hard quests and killing hard monsters, and help with armor and weapons. It's a fun game.

It can be very addictive. But it's no where near as bad as EQ was. In WoW, you can play for an hour and get a lot done and feel good about logging off. In EQ after an hour, your experience only increased a little bit.

Oh yeah, and it is 14.99 a month. Which, if you think about it, is cheaper then almost all entertainment out there. 14.99 gets you all the new patches to the game and unlimited playtime. There is a new expansion coming out in Jan that will cost, but that's it.

You have to purchase the game disks (carried at most stores that sell games) and install. This includes the game as it was at release and a free months play time (the first time you connect to the game servers it will update for, like, ever as there are patches and such to be applied from the last 2 years, this is done automatically. though you'll have to restart the game a few times).

Yes, this is a MMO and as such, has a monthly fee (only one I know that doesn't is Guild Wars). It's like $14.99US a month or so. You can pay for it monthly, or 3 month, 6 month and 1 year blocks (discount but all up front) with a credit card (require to activate your account). Alternatively, you can use game cards, sold where the game is sold that basically are "prepaid" game time (60 day blocks) and I think they can be used to activate your account.

Yes, you always have to play "with people" in that you can only access the game on the internet by connecting to the server. That doesn't mean you have to talk to or play with anyone else.
