I'm spineless at the peds office - Page 2

You really might want to consider a new doctor, AND follow all the suggestions for arming yourself before you walk in. The thing is though, that someone who's been such a bully already... how are you going to trust this person in the future? When I think of a pediatrician, the WBV's are the least of what I am thinking of. I'm thinking, what if there is an emergency in the middle of the night where you have to meet this person at the ER and trust that they are making good choices for you and your baby? On the spot, no time to research, no time to consider... you need to have someone you TRUST. Also for those middle-of-the-night calls and things like that.

I know exactly what you mean about arguing with them. I personally think it's more delicate than just being firm or being snarky or being whatever. You want this person to, kinda, LIKE you... because (at least in my mind) it helps make sure they will do their BEST for you and go above and beyond to ensure the very best in care for your baby. (ETA: yeah, I know, ethically, professionally, they have to do their best for EVERYONE. This to me is just a feeling of comfort. I want to feel *comfortable* with my ped. Plus, I mean... they can always refuse to work for you right?) So it's hard to walk in feeling like you will argue or rudely shut off any discussion or whatever. At least for me, it is, I mean I could do that but boy would I feel horrible/wierd/worried having to call that person I'd been rude to in the middle of the night for help.

Anyways, I'm babbling on here, but basically... it really, really might be a good idea to find someone who is willing to work *with* you to make the best decisions for your baby... someone who is glad to give you their medical opinion and then allow YOU to make the decision. Because the decisions, really, have to be yours. This is your baby.

I hope that makes sense! And mama, I know it can be hard.

I feel so stupid. It's like all the info I had researched left my head entirely. And it seemed I'd be an idiot not to give him everything. I just get in there and the doctor make it all make sense some how. I guess I'm a great candidate for brainwashing?

Does anyone have a doctor how honor there choice to not vax or be selective?
It does pay to "shop around" for a supportive doctor. When my friend's doctor pointed out to her that her baby was due for her vaccinations and my friend replied that she had decided against vaccination, the doctor simply said: "That's fine, I'll support you in whatever you want to do." It would be great if all doctors were as open-minded.

Remember that the vaccination decision is entirely yours and your husband's, as it is you and your baby who have to live with the consequences of your decisions, not your doctor. You don't "owe" anything to your doctor, the medical profession, the pharmaceutical industry, or to society or the government for that matter. A doctor is simply someone parents may wish to consult over this issue, but parents are are not under any obligation whatsoever to follow any advice given.

It must be kept in mind that parents are their children's natural guardians and as such it is they (and not their doctor) who are ultimately responsible for their child's health, whether they decide for or or against vaccination,.

It is a good idea for parents to request the vaccine package inserts of the "recommended" vaccines from their doctor, then take them home and study them thoroughly to get some understanding of what is actually being injected into their children. Consultation of an on-line medical dictionary may be necessary to look up difficult-to-understand words.

There are also internet places where parents can download forms for their doctor to sign, to say that he/she will pay full financial compensation in the event of any permanent damage as a result of vaccination. Doctors usually quickly lose interest in vaccinating a child or harassing parents if they take this approach.

All the best!

In Germany, doctors are obliged by law to fully inform parents about vaccinations including possible side-effects. If the doctors fails to mention possible reactions and the child suffers a reaction, the doctor (or respectively his/her insurer) is legally liable for compensation for any permament damage sustained.

about medicaid

In response to medicaid, it depends on the state. medicaid is run independently from state to state, and has different rules and regulations and blabla. in texas if you do not go to all well baby vists and your child is not up to date on all vaccinations, they CAN discontinue your coverage. it doesn't mean they do or will, just that they can. or atleast that is what is said on all my paperwork when my dd was on medicaid, but that was several years ago.

my Dr is even more anti-vax than me! I found her by recomendations on the tribe board for my state and reviews on a local website.

Can I suggest you write it down? I know that when I was discussing this with my parenting partner, it helped to list each vaccination, general information from the CDC about them and the diseases (all cited), and then my specific statements or concerns about them. Short and to the point, and easy to reference.
