Hi gals, I lurk here..........

My friend told me about a news report tonight that said flu is starting 6 weeks early in our area....blahblahblah. Typical media stuff. I've never had nor have I given Rowan a flu shot and I don't intend to.

However, if we are doing tons of playgroups and the flu is PERHAPS hitting us as hard as they claim.......I want to boost us now.

So, I know I need to get us on sodium ascorbate.......but what else have I seen mentioned her? Was it selenium? How about homeopathics?

Thanks gals!

I was the one who saw the news and they said if you get the flu shot, you only have a 10% chance of getting the flu. The other thing that they said was that certain people "must" get the flu vax--like kids age 6mo-5yrs! That goes against everything I've heard here! :

Good nutrition. Plenty of fruit and veggies. Avoid all junk/fast food, sodas, medicine.

I only use SA when we get sick. Otherwise we might cause a dependency or imbalance.

But when we do feel something coming on we hit it with ecchinacea, SA, zinc and a few teas we keep handy.

FYI - if you have allergies to Ragweed (severe allergist dx'd) you might also react in a similar way to Echinacea. I do and investigated why, they are related. I've never had a problem with Chamomile though and they are also related.

As for prevention, good hygiene practices are the best measures to take. I have everyone wash their hands upon entering the house. I wash down surfaces frequently (tables, counters, chair backs, door knobs, light switches, remote controls, etc). I will when prego, like now, be a bit more careful when we are out, I have been known to carry Lysol wipes in my purse to wipe down restaurant tables and chairs! And yet I would not use a Lysol product like that in my home.

Good health, solid well informed supplementation of one's diet where needed, and a few extras on hand for when you feel sick. I take AG Immune support, I keep VIT C around and will be getting Selenium ASAP and I give my kids a whole food antioxident mineral supplement along with Cod Liver Oil.

Okay.......we seem to be on the right track then. We take our multivitamin and probiotic, eat pretty decently, and sleep adequately but I'll get some (more) C and selenium for if we get anything.

Thanks!

There is also a genetic factor --
Some people are just blessed to never get sick, like my dh and my mother. I swear it's is genetic more than rest, food, etc. My dh doesn't get the sleep he needs, nor does he eat as well as the rest of us and yet never, not 1X in 11 yrs of marriage has he been sick.
My father gets sick a lot and my mother blames it on his lack of sleep -- I think he just has weak genes.
I seem to be more average (well probably above given I do take care of myself and prevent a lot of stuff but sometimes I know I'm just more suseptible, I can feel my immune system being taxed more than it can handle) and my kids are probably above average holding more of the stuff my dh has than what I've got.

I promise I've read the SA thread(s) so if you tell me to go back and check I will, but right now we are neck-deep in SA while battling a family-wide cold. When I think we're coming out of it, should we back out of our dosage to try and 'wean' and/or balance out the c? We have AA crystals, so should we switch it (SA for acute, AA for everyday) while we come down from our current dosages (which is roughly 7 grams p/person the last few days)?

I hope that makes sense..

What is AA?

I think we are genetically blessed......we don't get sick often and I don't think I've ever had the "flu".

Ascorbic Acid. It's a different form of Vit C than Sodium Ascorbate. The sticky at the top is amazing to learn about the different forms and how they work.

Good stuff on this board!

I can only tell you what we do. We do not take any vitamins. But we do take probiotics and eat very healthy.

If we feel a cold coming on, we get out everything we have and use it. SA is first on the list and in large doses. When in a few days or a week we feel better, we cut it out altogether. That's it until the next time. I personally just don't think we need anything extra and it is working well FOR US.

There are some teas that we drink during "flu season" although I don't think we need it. It is Robois and Astragalus tea. We drink that pretty much every day for breakfast.
