Never heard of her, but I like the titles and will definitely look for her in the library next week! Is it like fantasy/sci fi? Medieval? I'm very into authors like Juliette Marillier, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Diana(sp?) Paxson...

Brother to Dragons, Cpompanion to Owls is kind of sci-fi/dystopian, with a bit of a cyberpunk edge. The Wolf books (I think there'slike 5 of them) are more medivial/fantasy, very enjoyable. Brother to Dragons...stands out but is very different from her other stuff.

Hi, skim!!

I definitely would start with Brother To Dragons, Companion To Owls. It's really cool.

then, Through wolf's eyes, and if you like that, there's like 5 more books in that series. the Hidden Pyramid is an entirely different sort of thing, historical fiction/fantasy. and there's another book, child of a rainless year, that I haven't checked out yet.

But, Brother....is so fantastic and really interesting, and it just got re-released after years out of print, as a trade paperback.

My library didn't have anything by her, but through a search there I found a short story by Kate Wilhelm entitled "A Brother to Dragons, a companion to owls". Dystopian, post-catastrophe, near-future setting in a big city (new york?). It's in a collection of short stories called Orbit 14.

oh, weird! did you check it out? how is it?

yeah, I read it and the other stories, too. Ed. by Damon Knight.

It's pretty good, really. Doomed population due to some kind of disease, focus on elderly survivors, but there are the feral children... a bit predictable, imo. Nothing that rocks any kind of social boats, in fact there is a little xtian subtext, but it is amusing. One of the better stories in the book, imo.

It's such a similar title, it can't be coincidence! I'll have to keep stalking my library to see if they get any of her stuff.

Thanks for the heads up.

well, the kate wilhelm story was originally published in the 70s. So the Lindskold one came much later. Good luck!

eta: not by the jungle book that I can tell, but there may be other connections... ? Do tell if you find them!
