Abeka vs Sonlight???

I had planned on using Sonlight next year for 1st grade however my cousin has given me the K Curriculum to try out for my dd this year. I just ordered the workbooks so we will begin in about a week or two. She has offered to pass each years curriculum to me since her youngest is one year above my dd. I am just curius if you have used both, which did you prefer? What are the pros and cons of both?

Thanks!

I'm new to Sonlight and Abeka (heck homeschooling in general!) I love love love sonlights books! I'll probably always use the books they suggest.
I do however prefer Abeka to Somlight. I'm a workbook lover I admit, and so is my son. We love Abeka for Language, and Phonics. Next year I am going to look into their History and Geography.
For Math I use Horizons and I"m loving their spiral approach. We also bought Math u See to try out and it's good too, but I prefer Horizons.

All of my Dc Love to Read

and be read to, so they prefer SOnlight. Workboks have their place for us, but we all retain sooo much more from "real" or "living" books in our family.

I have a friend who does almost all ABeka and recently gave SL a shot...she is impressed by how much her kids like the books and how much more even *she* remembers about history!

My eldest ds, who is now ins PS for 8th grade, loved those SL books and loved history *until* he got to PS. Now he hates it! I can see why. It's so incredibly dry.

I recommend Sonlight for everything but Lanuage (Grammar). We use Abeka for this. The Sonlight Lanuage is awful! Overall, I guess it depends on your child's learning style but we prefer reading the Sonlight books! The 3rd through 5th grade readers are incredible! I am currently doing 3rd grade with my niece and we love it!

LOL! We use Sonlight specifically for the grammar. We love it!! We also use the history because they go well together and the kids love to read. We skip the science and Bible. We've really found the history and language arts to be excellent and we like the sequencing of the curriculum.

I've never used Sonlight, but our center was using Abeka for a bit and I HATED it. It was far to structured and left little time for creativity or free choice play. YUCK YUCK YUCK!

Thank you for all of the replies. I guess we will see how it works for us soon. The only thing I am concerned about is that I hear it takes a lot of time each day and I don't want my dd to become bored with it.

Also, if you do try Sonlight PLEASE don't try to do everything they suggest in the manual. It is impossible to do it all - the guide even says that! Pick and choose what you want to do - that is what we do. You will go crazy if you try to do everything or if you follow their schedule.
