The Loewen article is really wonderful, and lays to rest many myths concerning the pilgrims and Native Americans. As mother of a native american child I find it difficult to teach her about Thanksgiving with so much influence being placed on the pilgrims and their apparent generosity toward her ancestors. I 'don't want to form in her mind a negative view of Thanksgiving, but an honest one.

Her school is slaughtering the truth of the Wampanoag peoples right done to the "houses" they lived in. Kailey came home with pictures of tipi's instead of wigwam's and another student (in 4th grade) came home witha beautiful homemade adobe. WTH?

I'm wondering what other fibs they are telling her and I wonder how much of it is forced on the teachers to tell.

i just read through both of the links and really recommend that kate waters book, Giving Thanks: The 1621 Harvest Feast. it looks to be out of print, but i checked it out of the library. it sets many things straight that the first link didn't quite get right and has great photos, too. she also has several books from the point of view of children who lived in the 1600s, both wampanoag and english. here you go -- http://www.amazon.com/s/102-6260086-...ters%2C%20Kate .

That was beautifully written. I actually had tears in my eyes at the end. I wonder what my kids are learning in school now. My boys haven't mentioned anything. I will read that to them and ask them what they learned. Thank you for posting it.

After reading Kama's link again I realized it would be perfect for elementary school students. I think I'll print it and pack it in Kailey's bookbag with a note for her teacher Thanks!
