Hi everybody,

I am looking for ideas of educational DVDs for my 6.5 yo dd (that I just removed from public school) and my 4.5 yo ds. Pretty much any subject - English, French, Spanish, geography, history, what else ?

If you have any ideas, I'd love to read them !

thanks

My DS really likes Popular Mechanics for Kids. It's one of those things you can watch with your kids too and not get bored.

Well it depends on interests. My children (younger ones that is), love sing-alongs, Magic Schoolbus, Carmen Sandiego, Liberty Kids, Really Wild Animals, Leap Frog dvd's, Charlie Brown (there are a good handful of "educational" ones with the Peanut Gang), oh geeze there are more, but can't think of them off hand. They also love watching Alton Brown on the Food Network (love the mix of History, Science and Home Ec. that he provides). They also love watching Myth Busters and Really Dirty Jobs and several more "adult" like shows. OH and they also like older clasics, like the Shirley Temple movies and clasic musicals. Many times, when possible, dd will put a video on in another lang. esp. her singalongs. She also set the tv up to closed caption when she was teaching herself to read, and we've never taken it off since.

This might be too boring for your kids, depending on their reading level, but Between the Lions is a good program. I don't know if it's available on DVD. We record it off PBS so we can watch it when we want to. We've really been able to expand some reading stuff without doing drills. We already know all vowels and sounds of blends like "ch". It goes beyond the basic alphabet sounds. I didn't do much with vowels before we found this.
