Anyone else disappointed?? DH & I saw it today, and I think it missed the political and economic context. As I saw it, it was just The Jungle ("there's s**t in the meat") deradicalized. Among other things, I felt like the parody of the ineffective activist students sent a message that there's nothing you the viewer can do.

I haven't seen it yet, but why was it rated R?

Dang. I liked the book and was looking forward to the movie.

I found it very disappointing too. I was also absolutely shocked, and horrified, by the graphic animal violence in the movie. Unbelieveable. I am not a very sensitive person, and I thought I was going to puke. The only warning on it was, "disturbing content." This was a lot more than disturbing content, IMO.

There are multiple grounds for teh R rating. First, as the PP mentioned, the animal slaughter; second, sex (full frontal nudity) and sexual abuse (including rape); third, well, language (the F word) (both English and Spanish). Not taht the last is a big concern of mine, but I recently saw This Film Is Not Yet Rated, so now I know how they rate things. But seriously I had to turn my head from a certain workplace accident scene, and teh slaughterhouse scenes are graphic, as per PP.

No! Say it isn't so! First Prairie Home Companion, now this.......:

I know I've said this before, but "The Corporation" will probably scratch the itch - one of the best documentaries I've seen, ever. Touches on some of the same things, but puts it in a rather grand context.

Haven't seen it yet, but I WAS disappointed when my dad told me that they were making a FICTION (vs. documentary-style) version of Fast Food Nation.

Did the success of Super-Size Me do NOTHING to convince the powers that be that another fast-food-industry documentary could do well at the box office?

I've read the book, but haven't seen the movie, how do they fit a sex scene and sexual abuse into it? I don't remember sex in the book.

spoiler alert

basically linklater runs it as 2 parallel stories -- an immigrant couple from mexico who work in the meatpacking plant and a worker at mickey's cum animal rights activist. sex abuse comes in with regard to worker exploitation.
