I got a doll cradle from rosieshippotoys.com and its unfinished.

What is ok to use to finish it? What do I look for NOT to be in the ingredients (obviously lead based paint) and where do i find it?

Will leaving it unnatural last as long?

Ive never finished something that my dd was actually going to touch and play with.........any suggestions would help

Rainsmom,

living in AZ, you will know how dry it is, and that cld destroy your doll cradle if not protected!!
dh uses and simple loves....... shellac. I don't know much abt wood finishes, but according to dh, it's natural, non-toxic, easy to apply, dries fast!! He uses it on our furniture as well as dd's. I think you can find that in Home Depot. That's all I know, hth!

I have noticed that some of our "natural" toys say they've been finished with beeswax or linseed oil, so they are "safe for little mouths". You might want to contact North Star Toys (www.northstartoys.com), as I believe they use linseed oil and can possibly tell you how to acquire and apply some.

Good luck and have fun with your wooden toys!

I haven't tried these but I think they might fit the bill for what you're looking for:

I think they are similar to the finish on the waldorf-y wood kitchens.

beeswax!! Its a wonderful natural finish.

Linseed oil is great too but a little more messy to use

beeswax is great and can be mixed with oil, too. for our playstands (both to keep and sell), we've used tung oil. takes many coats and a lot of rubbing but it's well worth it.

if you use linseed or tung oils be very careful with the rags. the can says they can spontaneously combust and it is absolutely true! a story in mother earth news tells of someone's whole house burning down because of leaving the rags lying about. the finishes are wonderful but follow the disposal directions!
