\heart murmur

We had Johanna's 2 month check-up on Friday and our doc found a heart murmur. We have an appt w/ a pediatric cardiologist next week. That sounds so scary. My brother gad a HM and it was never a big deal for him, so we're praying that J's is the same way. Our ped said it was a loud one, which usually means a smaller one. I'm crossing my fingers that she's right.

I was told I have one too. It never caused any problems, but when I was 20 I started having lots of chest pains and ended up in the hospital. Never found out if they were related...

My ds had one and had a ekg and chest x ray at around a month old there was nothing abnormal on either. My ped didnt even mention sending him to a cardiologist. Hopefully your dd's is the same as ds's and wont be a issue.

I think this is more common than people think. Our ped even said that it is not unusual for children under 5 to have them on and off just because of the rate the are growing at. (Our #1 had one dagnosed at her 4 year appt that had never been heard before. It was gone at the recheck 2 months later.)

I wouldn't stress too much (easier said than done) . If they find it to be a non-innocent sounding murmur, they will do an echocardiogram to find specifically what is causing it. We went through this 2 days after birth to find our daughter has a ventricular spetal defect. This is a small hole in the wall b/t two chambers of the heart. We are also meeting with a ped cadiologist early next month but were told since the size of the hole is small, they ususally close on their own.

It is so scary to hear any unsettling news about your babies heart but a majority of the time we worry for naught. If you want, do a search on congenital heart defects (CHD) online. They are more common than people realize (1 in 100 babies).

My first reaction when hearing this was, "what did I do during pregnancy to cause this" I founf the answer was 'nothing' CHD usually happen within the first months of life when the heart is forming and is just something that randomly happens. Trinity was born with one, but it was gone by her 2 month checkup.

I also have a murmur, and it's never really bothered me.
