The only way to heal (as a whole, not individually) is to have enough self control to act responsibly and civily when confronted with ignorance like this (IMO). Otherwise the ignorant person wins because they get a rise out of you. Also just my opnion.

yeah, even trying to compare the man's angry cracker comment to the tirade of abuse that kramer unleashed just shows the lengths the people will go to in order to deny racism.

If someone hits your child, and your child calls them a jerk, do you try and say that your child's behavior is the same as the one that him them? :

Generally, we do, yes. I think it's worth examining why we don't always manage to do that when it is a PoC responding to a racist attack?

It reminds me of the drag queens with their high heels in the gay bar attack I mentioned above. I think it would be hardly appropriate for someone to say, "Well, that straight guy may have come into the gay bar to assault gay men, but those drag queens hurt him too!"

ITA. And that is why, as a white person, I look to myself. We threw the first stone, we threw a lot of stones, and we continue to. Heavy, heavy stones. That is our responsibility. My racism is my responsibility. I do believe we all carry it; I know I do. I'm not going to worry about a PoC saying, 'cracka' or whatever because bottom line is I know I have a lot of privilege in this world because of my white race. I need to focus on myself, on my own responsibility as a white person in this culture, on undoing my own racism and the racism I participate in in my culture.


I get what you are saying there, and it is GREAT if that is working for you in your self travels.

But I feel it is dangerous to ignore or accept when something is cast in your direction too.

That is where you and I separate on our views I think, I don't think you are wrong in anything you have said, except that racism requires power, but I feel it is dangerous to allow a group of people, even if it is the vocal miniority to assault another group of people without saying anything about it.

tm-you are forgetting that queers and poc are just supposed to smile sweetly when insulted or assualted by straight white people. Otherwise-they are "part of the problem".

Oh! Thank you. Well then that has been my problem. In fact, I think my crap sweet smile skills have done me a number of disservices in my life.

Yep, I hear you, and I do think that is where we differ. I'm surprised, I didn't think you and I would find any common ground at all on this subject.

I do think we condone it, yes. The self defense laws here state that it is acceptable to use equal force, or as much force as is necessary to remove one's self or disable the attacker.

Which is exactly what the guy in the video did in response to Michael Richards. He used less force than Richards did, until Richards left the stage.

I've never defended racism on any end, but I don't deny that it exists on all angles.


I get attacked because I acknowledge anyone can be racist. And I can endure those attacks so long as I feel that what I am saying isn't falling on completely deaf ears.


I try not to attack back, sometimes I do, my bad. But as we were saying all people are human. But I know I am not the first to strike except to say anyone can be racist, and all people who perform racist acts should be educated or punished depending on the act.



I have a very racist friend, well seeing as MamaG likes to crack the joke he is actually the ex boyfriend of my sister inlaws sister who happens to be best friends with my Brother.

But when he goes on his tiriade of how he hates 'african americans' but thats not the words he uses I tell him to shut up, no one wants to hear it, and he is wrong.


But with someone like that there is no educating..... I hope one day he will see the light on his own, and I hope there are more people in his life who don't just 'accept' what he says and actually confronts him. But he really does believe what his spits out and its disgusting.


But he is a 'family friend' so he isn't going anywhere, but when i am invited to hang out if he IS there, I tend to not show up. My brother is starting to realize this. Didn't go on 3 camping trips this summer, and the one I did go on my brother brought him along. Didn't go over well and I let him know.


Anyways. glad you are seeing that I am not an evil racist as some people here have me pegged for.

On the video, all I could think was, MAN he must be loaded on something to screw up his (has-been) life like that, in that blatant of a fashion. Maybe he can join Mel Gibson in the Celebrity Racist Rehab Lounge, where they serve denials and grovelling by the quart.

Sorry that is how you are reading it to be. I have never said anything that indicated Michael Richards didn't say racist remarks. I believe they were both racist remarks.

If you read into my participation on this thread as a denial of racism, more power to you.

FTR - They are both saying racial slurs.
