Anyone read this book? If so, what are you thoughts.. I am thinking of getting it for my nephew who is 9, he loves dragons but is a bit sensitive. Any opinions? Is it scarey?

Wow, I just now found this thread.
DD and I are reading Eragon. It's violent in parts, and the main character's uncle (father figure) dies near the beginning. But Eragon wouldn't have gone on his adventure if the uncle hadn't died, so dd understands why the author wrote it like that.
DD LOVES the character of Saphira (the dragon).
I don't know if I would let dd read this by herself. Having me read it along with her lets us discuss the more disturbing aspects of the book.

I loved Eragon, I thought it was great. I also have read the sequel Eldest, which may have been even better. If you are considering it for a 9yo, I would take the child's temperment into consideration. If the child in question is very sensitive, I'd wait, otherwise I think it would be ok.
Dh and I saw the movie last night too. I liked the movie ok, but it deviated from the book a lot.
All said and done, I really like Eragon.

I haven't read it, but my just-turned-6 dd did and loved it, and she tends to be sensitive to things that are scary, so I'm thinking it can't be terribly violent. I'm not sure, though, so please take this with a grain of salt. If he loves dragons, maybe he would also like the Pern novels by Anne McCaffrey. The first one is Dragonflight.
