Apparently there will be an Unschooling family on Dr Phil on Friday. I'm pretty sure it's THIS Friday and not NEXT Friday, but I might be wrong.

The Great School Debate
Parents want the best for their kids, but what’s the best way to educate them? Dayna and her husband don’t believe in tests or grades. Plus, RaeAnne calls schools unsafe, and wants to homeschool her kids.

I just saw the commercial for these, looks pretty bad.. The tag line was something like "these people refuse to send their kids to school."

I got an alert for it from my homeschool group and it seems Dr. Phil treats the family horribly. Surprise!

A great link

I am an unschooler and this is a link for a homeschooler mom that attended the show. She talks about what happened in the taping. Pretty bad!
I know the unschooler mom is a really great mom with wonderful kids.

We just saw a preview while channel surfing... that poor woman. It's gonna suck. Dr. Phil said, "If my parents had done that with me, I would be a vegetable now."

For the record, I've subbed at the high school he attended... I can't imagine he learned much there.

Rain is insulted, as well...

I hate Dr. Phil. Every time I've surfed passed his show, he's bashing co-sleeping, gentle parenting, extended breastfeeding or such. I don't want to watch this episode.

Dayna, the unschooling mom on the show posted here about her experience on another thread, and posted she thought it went well.

I won't watch, but am looking forward to reading the discussion here afterwards.

I cant get it here, preempted by football.

There is a small poll on his site
in which you can vote for what you believe to be the
best form of education. All indications are that
this guy is going to have a lot of negative
presentation about homeschooling - here is your
chance to put in your two cents and tell him what
you think.

Wow! I read the recap on the site above.... it sounds infuriating! I would have been flustered too.... its like we are from completely different worlds at times. Unfortunately I run into this type of thinking every day in the real world... Thankfully it is never in front of a full studio audience, or a Dr Phil!! He is so manipulative in putting forth his view... he sidetracks what you are really trying to say by saying something completely obscure to prove his point. I am so glad that we dont watch television... I would have been screaming at it about now.

Hey, we're winning!

Dayna's quotes on that site sounded really good to me... she really seems to have it together. In spite of Dr. Phil's slant, maybe her message will come through...

I didn't see, but I just read the using section at his website. What Dayna said read great to me.

I thought she did such a great job maintaining herself while Dr Phil asked her questions clearly just to try to make her and her husband appear stupid or uninformed. Not only did she help reinforce my reasons why we're considering homeschooling, but she really made me want to learn all I can about UNschooling as well...

I'm glad I can read the re-cap on the site but bummed I couldn't watch the show... we had college football instead I haven't watched Dr. Phil forever but was hoping to catch this episode.

I voted on the poll, wonder if he'll look at the results?

It's not on until 10 here, and it's only 6:50 now... Rain really wants to watch it, and I don't think it conflicts with Basement Sublet of Horror (our favorite show) so we'll probably watch and yell at the tv...

i watched the show and thought the unschooling mom did great! dr. phil kept bringing up his ridiculous concerns and she really tried to address them altho he kind kept cutting her off. the one thing i would really love to see, and he has brought it up before, is that the research he talks about showing that kids in the middle grades NEEd the socialization of the schools otherwise they don't fair too well.

I didn't watch the show, but I voted in the poll, and homeschooling is winning at 45%!!
