anyone let out seams to add elastic?

My brother asked me to let out the seams of his skidoo pants and add some elastic to for accomodate his expanding waistline.

Any tips? Please? I'm feeling lost as how to tackle this.....

I would split it at the seam on the top and instead of adding elastic to it, I'd use another long piece. I think the chance of it coming apart will be a lot greater if there's a couple cuts and reattachments. Have you ever put elastic in pants before? If not, the easiest thing to do it get a large safety pin, attach it to one end and run it through using the safety pin. It's a lot easier to maneuver through the fabric. Cut the elastic about an inch bigger than his waist, run it through, make sure it's not twisted, overlap the inch, sew a couple of times to reinforce and close the seam.

ETA: I just reread your post and is there no elastic in it to begin with? You want to just add some?

These are those overall type snow pants. There is some elastic in it(sewn in), but my brother has been eating a wee bit too much lately and can feel the zipper stretching in the front and it feels tight in the sides. We both figured adding some more elastic at the seams would lessen the pressure on the zipper and give him some more room. The bonus is he doenst care how it looks, just as long as it gives him some room.

Do you mean elastic strips that are encased, or the wide elastic that will be part of the outside? I am not describing what I mean vey well...

I think what I might do is to split the side seams from th hip or so up to the waist (or is it quite a bit higher? Anyway, the top edge, even if it is almost to the armpit). Then I would put in a triangle of fabric, with elastic at the top. Using wide (2"?) elastic would keep it from feeling like it was cutting into his ribs.
