Induction

Hi juliansmom,

Is this your first baby? I have one son (18 months) who is named Julian, too! Is it a family name?

I was induced 18 days before my due date; although I was monitored for one night two months before my due date, which really scared me as I was not ready to have a baby that night! However, my BP was over 140/90 for some time. (I was given Labetalol for the BP.) But, I don't see why your numbers are considered high? Like someone else mentioned, I’ve always heard it was the bottom number to consider. I'm not an expert at all, but I would definitely get more information before making your final decision.

I was disappointed that my induction did result in a C-section, but I'm not sure it was entirely due to the Pitocin. I am very short-waisted, and while my son turned almost completely, he did start to press on the cord, and his heart rate did drop. At that point it was an emergency. I believe this was the primary cause of my C-section as I am shaped just like my mother, and I was breech. (They actually stood over her and turned me, but I just turned back.) I think we have slightly prolapsed uteruses. And, my son had a slightly flattened head on one side and torticollis from the positioning for which he wore an orthotic helmet for months. He’s now fine. And, none of that had anything to do with being induced.

That said, I'm not sure if I had to deliver early again if I would go through the induction process unless it's necessary. By that I mean that if I felt I would have to have a C-section anyway I would just go ahead and do so rather than subjecting my child to the induction medications AND the epidural, etc. But, that’s with the assumption I would absolutely have to have a C-section. And, I have since read that there is some possible connection between Pitocin and autism, which has concerned me. Anyone familiar with this issue? Something to evaluate, I think.

As far as after birth... I did swell up like an elephant on my ankles and developed carpal tunnel in my left arm, probably due to lying on that side for so long.

While I do not want to dissuade you from having a necessary induction, I would talk to my doctor again about her reasons for wanting to induce.

Best wishes to you!

Brenda-
I'm right there with you. I'm getting induced due to my PUPPS, and the fact that I have basically scratched myself raw over the past few weeks. My OB did get me some oral meds, and they helped, but the rash is still there and still itchy. I feel that this is the best thing for me, and so does my OB. I support you 100% mama!

I don't think a mother sharing her experience/decision is "mainstream propaganda," and honestly even if I disagree with the choices someone else makes, I'm glad to see them here. I don't like the attitude of "other" message boards that run off people who don't follow the party line perfectly, and I don't want to see that here. I was trying really hard in my post to offer her information AND support, and she does deserve both, no matter what her decision is.

None of us can possibly know all the things that go into the WHY's of what we decide to do in any given instance.

Also, some of the mamas here are not recognizing that there are several different moms posting about needing induction for different reasons, with different decisions, and different paths to it.

There is only one mom talking about using cytotec. I still can't believe docs are allowed to use that if it is not FDA approved for pregnant women.. how do they get around that????

Also... I am sure that most moms here DO NOT WANT to be induced... if I had that awful PUPPS thing I've heard so much about, man.... I would probably be begging for something to get me going too!!!

So anyways, and support for moms whose births are going to begin in a way that may have been unforseen!!! I wish you all beautiful birthings

Magen, a bit tangential, but I have controlled my prurigo of pregnancy (a variant of PUPPS) using EFA and high doses of probiotics (45-60 billion cultures daily). While the symptoms and itchy lesions are not gone, they are much quieter and it has allowed me to sleep and my skin to start healing.

This approach with EFA and probiotics reduces the overall level of inflammation in the body, and is a more global approach to treating the skin issue than just going with a topical approach.

I went to a conference on holistic medicine that had a large focus on nutritional approaches in dealing with chronic conditions and this approach was discussed at length. It made sense intellectually and has been the only source of relief for me in months.

I saw results in less than a week.

On a lighter (and totally unrelated) note, let's just say that I chuckle every time I log on...My entire family was convinced I was having a boy early in my pregnancy and the u/s seemed to agree. I have loved the name Julian every since I was a teenager, so, when I signed up here, the username seemed to be a logical choice.

But, at my level II u/s I was told I am having a girl. This was confirmed at my most recent u/s a few weeks ago. So my "Julian" is actually going to be a "Maia". MDC does not allow for changes in username...

Back to the topic at hand, you brought up a very interesting point about the possible relationship between pitocin and autism. I'm not sure what the statistics are on this, but I've seen it mentioned a few too many times for comfort in medical literature. For me, this is the scariest piece of info regarding this issue.

Today, I called a few relatives overseas. It seems that Europeans are "loving" induction nowadays, too. : I learned about one cousin who had an induction a month ago and ended up with a long but vaginal deliver and about a friend of the family who had a horrible induction experience and ended up with an emergency c-section. Apparently, there was no medical reason for either induction except for the fact that both were slightly over their due dates (by one or two days). :

Hey Juliansmom: I was absolutely positive you could change your username but it would cost a few dollars in paypal, but could not find any evidence supporting that. I did find this however:
