Preventing head lice???

Reading the earlier head lice thread has got me all itchy and paranoid. My two older kids are in school and I am worried about the possibility of head lice going around, although we've never had it before. Could TTO be used as a preventative? Or Rosemary Oil? Or both? I am thinking of adding some to their shampoo, but do not know if it would be strong enough to repel them and I don't want to overdo it. If I got the school notice that head lice was going around, I'd definately do TTO at that time, but how about as a preventative?

TIA for any suggestions.

Max,
I have done loads of research on head lice, unfortunately, and one thing I have heard over and over again is that lice can't stand essential oils. So there are lots of shampoos out there that have TTO or rosemary oil in them, or you can add them to the shampoos you already have. Another thing I heard, and actually bought this and we still use it, is the Suave coconut scented shampoo and conditioner, which has coconut oil in both. Don't really know if it works or not but so far the lice haven't come back. I think the key things are to train your kids never to share combs, hats, hair accessories, etc... I would go so far as to speak to your childrens teachers and make certain they know that your kids are not to play with any dress up items so that your kids aren't exposed to head lice, body lice or scabies. Also, if you have girls, making them wear their hair in a pony tail or braids and spraying it with hairspray will make it resistant to lice as they can't get a grip on the hair shaft.
Lastly, believe it or not, I have heard that lice LOVE clean hair. Dirty hair is slippery and hard for them to hang onto. So during school season you might want to wash every other day or every few days rather than every day if that is what you do. You can also comb through their hair every night really quick just to make sure you don't spot anything. A big part of my problem was never having had lice before and not realizing what was going on until all three of us had caught it and it was totally out of control. If you can catch it early you can contain it a whole lot easier. good luck!!!!

Namaste,

Michelle

We've dealt with lice too. We live in a cold climate, so hats and stuff are shoved together for seven months of the year even if the kids aren't sharing. I'm not sure there is really a preventative which works. It's a little hard to tell since catching the lice can be hit or miss. My dd had a child in her class who had lice this year, but luckily, she didn't get them.

Our school nurse does frequent checks and I make sure when that I keep an eye out when washing or brushing their hair. If you are getting notes home, that means they are looking. I really would worry about it. Just check their scalps, so if it does happen it doesn't get ahead of you. We haven't had to deal with it since my oldest was in second grade and he's 22 now.

Lice goes around every year. I'm just really glad I don't have to do like they did when my mom was a kid (she's 89.) They would actually buzz cut everyone's hair, boys and girls, and use kereosene (did I spell that right?)

Once when it was rampant at the kid's school, I sent them off with rosemary oil dabbed around their necks. I had read in one of the lice books that they don't like the smell. For the rest of the fall, other parents literally "tore their hair out" trying to get rid of these suckers and we were free of them.
