Rec for a good entry level serger or embroidery machine?

I'm putting together my christmas list. Everyone is all over me about what I want. I would love to have a serger machine and an embroidery machine, but I know nothing about doing either.

For the serger, I'm thinking a decent entry level model would be fine. It doesn't need to do everything, but I've run into projects where I really wished I had a serger to finish the way I want. I found the Brother 1034D on amazon and it was well reviewed, so I was going to put that on my list.

For the embroidery machine, they are more expensive and less likely someone will actually buy me one, but you never know, everyone might get together and combine or something. For this, I would want something that could interface with my computer and that I could make my own designs somehow (with seperate software would be fine) - I don't want one that just does preprogrammed designs or design cards, its not clear to me whether some of the less expensive models do this, or if this is a feature only on the super high end ones.

ETA - I've been poking around and it does sound like the ones that let you do what I want are the super high end professional, etc. Sounds like an embroidery machine is probably not worth bothering, but I think I would like a serger.
What machines do you have and what good / bad experiences have you had?

What about asking for a gift certificate to the sewing shop of your choice?
I had a Pfaff serger and I didn't really love it. It was okay, but not my best friend... I have a Babylock now and I like it much more. It's more user friendly, easier to thread, and doesn't seem so cranky about sewing knits. My Pfaff always ate up lighter weight knits.
My embroidery machine is also a Babylock. I like it for embroidery, but I'll be honest, I don't think I'm going to go through with selling my Viking machine. I like how it sews better.
Hope that helps! Tell us if you get what you desire!
