Mei Tei Users a ?

When is it considered safe to wear a baby/toddler on your back rather than the front with a Mei Tei?

DS is almost 10 months old, sit well, stands on his own (holding something), and I'm wanting to start wearing him on my back.

Depending on how you put the babe on your back, they are safe from birth. I didn't discover the MeiTai until dd was 5months old and I've been wearing her on my back and front ever since.

: We started at about 4 months, give or take

I wear my 3 month old on my back, but only if I am at home where I can check him in a mirror, or if I am out, only if I have someone with me who can take a peek at him and help me get him down (I only get him on and off my back alone if I'm home and can do it over the bed). Wearing baby on the back is awesome for getting household chores and cooking done. He loves it.

Many do from birth. My DD is 8 months & has been on my back for several months.

I started at about 6 months with Devon. Now that I have more practice I will start much earlier with the next babe.

Hi Sandy!

I just tried it with Caden but he wants to lean back to reach for things. I think I have him in there pretty tightly, but maybe I don't. COuld it be the tyep of Mei Tei that I have?

Oh and I lost about a half a head of hair in the process as he was yanking on my pony tail!

Ain't that the truth!!!

DD is 3.5 months old and we've just recently mastered it. I also only do it at home over the bed & with the mirror there to check. For the first few days I had the DH do a visual just to make 1000% certain. I still frequently check on her as we go about our work. I use a front carry moby for outside the house; easier to get her in & out at this age, and I can shop around her just fine in a front carry.

She has a great time, but when I take her down she also has my hair all over her face where she pulled it out & tried to eat it. I can't decide if it's less painful to wear it down where she get the longer stuff from the main part of my scalp, or to put up where she pulls the short tender hairs at the base of my neck. :

My little one's small enough yet that the back of the mei tai is still supporting her head, so there's no leaning back issues for us yet!

The type of MT shouldn't influence that. What type of MT do you have, I think I saw it before but I can't remember.
When you have them on your back you do need to tie it pretty darn tight. I also like to give them a small toy to distract them. A nursing necklace turned backwards (if it has a 'front' side) works great!

I bought one from a WAHM mom out of NM.

I tried it again, but made sure his arms were down to this sides and that helped immensely, but I still cannot get it very tight. I tried doing my bounce to get it tighter like I do when he's front facing, but it didn't seem to work too well.

I started with Ellie around four months and am now really comfortable with it. I do think that whether the MT has a headrest or not will influence how secure it feels.

I recently traded for a babyhawk onbu with no headrest and was quite freaked when she fell asleep with her head hanging all the way back. She was fine though. Defnitely I'm more comfortable with some kind of headrest for back carries with a MT or onbu.

My DS didn't like the Mei Tai until he was a little older (6-7 mos). I think he didn't like the way it spread his legs when he was younger and he didn't like sitting "froggy style". I am sure your babe would LOVE it though.

If you have a MT that is not tied tight, a head support is not going to keep them from leaning back. A head rest really only helps with head support.

I started wearing ds on my back when he was about 3 months old. The only reason I waited that long was for my comfort level. By then, he could hold his head pretty stable and had a bit of control over his own body, so he wasn't so floppy so to speak. 10 months is plenty old enough for me He's still happily riding in back now at 9 months

it really depends on your level of experience i think...
liesl didnt like the mei tai when she was a newborn but we used the podegi in the traditional torso carry within the first month.
a little head control helps alot though...

so i guess its time whenever youre comfortable with it.

I think 9 months is when we started backwearing.
