sushi??

My co-workers want to take me out to lunch....I want to go to a nice sushi place near whereby, what do you think of eating sushi this late in the pregnancy? I hadn't eaten any all along - what's the concern at this point - that you might eat some bad sushi and die from botulism??? Any experiences/advice will be greatly apreciated.

Thx.

I have avoided during all of my pg's eventhough I enjoy it very much. I believe the biggest concern is that you can get food poisoning which can cause vomitting, diareah, etc. and that during pg dehydration can be a serious concern.
I eat veggie "sushi" to keep my cravings down and have found some really yummy combinations. Also any of the cooked fish creations are fine.

I'm just lurking from due in Feb, but if you're really craving sushi, there are a lot of vegetarian/cooked options available. I avoided raw fish during my last pg and this one too, so far, but when I've wanted it, I've gotten rolls with mostly veggies and the sushi place we like has great cooked shrimp and king crab leg sushi. I haven't had it in so long, now I want some too!

I do really adore the raw tuna and yellowtail the most though... mmmm.....

i'm coming out of the closet here...
I eat Sushi and Sashimi.
I make sure it is not any 'big' fish (tuna -which I LOVE) and comes from a reputable place where it is fresh for sure.

I have never gotten sick from any sushi in the past and it is something that my body is used to.

Now, if I had never had sushi, pregnancy would not be a good time to start, but, since that is not the case.

Sushi is not the same thing as Sashimi. Sashimi is what american women are told to stay away from (raw fish), Sushi is fish, or egg, or veggies, etc... On the little rice rectangles or in a roll.

Use your discrection. (I'd go and enjoy.

I'm with katt. I've eaten sushi and sashimi this pregnancy, but avoided the tuna (though I usually *love* ahi) because of mercury. I think the main concern with sashimi is the raw fish, and possibility of food poisoning. But if you go to a good, reputable place that you know has sushi-grade, FRESH, quality ingredients I wouldn't be worried. I've been fine the few (okay, ~6 : ) times I've had sushi this pregnancy. I also ate it equally as frequently pre-preggy and have never had a problem at the places I get it, so I trust their food, and I trust my body.

Plus, there's always the veggie and cooked options...and those are quite yummy too. Mmm, sushi...

I've stayed away from sashimi while pregnant, but like other posters have said, I've never gotten food poisoning from it pre-pregnancy. I guess the risk isn't worth it for most people on the off chance you would get something.

I've been getting california rolls, and you could get the shrimp and rice and other cooked ones if you are worried.

Sushi is my absolutely favourite food so I really had to check into it especially since I never stopped with my last two pregnancies either...

First... why is Sushi a` "no-no"?
1: Parasites, 2 Mercury.

OK... Mercury...
Not all fish will contain traces of Mercury, so it recommended to avoid those which do such as shark, tilefish, king mackerel, and swordfish and stick with those that don't such as shrimp, salmon, pollock, and catfish etc...
This of course is for Cooked fish also...

Next... Parasites...
what I found (which is great for me since I make my own Sushi so I know how it is made and how fresh it is) is that freezing the fish correctly is as efficient at killing parasites than cooking it...

From the FDA
Quote:
Freezing and storing at -4°F (-20°C) or below for 7 days (total time), or freezing at -31°F (-35°C) or below until solid and storing at -31°F (-35°C) or below for 15 hours, or freezing at -31°F (-35°C) or below until solid and storing at -4°F (-20°C) or below for 24 hours is sufficient to kill parasites. FDA's Food Code recommends these freezing conditions to retailers who provide fish intended for raw consumption.

So I would go ahead and get your Sushi.... and not worry
HTH....

I am a huge sushi fan and craved it from time to time but haven't had any except the california roll (which is cooked) on two occasions. I figure I can have all the sushi I want (accompanied by beverage of choice) when the baby's safely here.

Me too! My midwife sings that "Going Japanese" song from the eighties for me.

Yep, I've had a few visits to my favorite place too. I women that work there swear by it, and even gave me a few suggestions that are great for preg. women (fish with lots of iron). But I agree with the other ladies, use your own discretion

I NEED SUSHI!!!!!!!

It's been one of my biggest unfulfilled cravings this pg, by far. I'm deprived.

Everyone else said what I'd say already, other than the fact that I NEED SUSHI.

So - I went out for the sushi lunch with my co-workers. I ordered a sushi lunch special and asked for as much smoked fish, and without tuna. I had octopus, roe, mackerel....plus stuff like edamame and california rolls, also a spicy salmon roll as well OMG it was good. I was so full and it was really delicious. I had no ill effects whatsoever. MMMMmm good. Sushi one time late during this pregnancy has been okay.

I've been eating raw fish sushi. Like others mentioned I avoid the big fish more likely to contain mercury. Also I only eat at places I trust and have eaten at for years. No grocery store or mall foodcourt sushi!

(Not my DDC, but came up in "New Posts")
