This summer, the government of the Philippines was to enact a law known as the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) which would have strengthened the country's existing breastfeeding protection laws and restricted the aggressive advertising of infant formula. However, a coalition known as the Pharmaceutical and Health Care Association of the Philippines (PHAP) challenged the law in the country's Supreme Court. The PHAP represents three major US formula companies; Abbott Ross, Mead Johnson, and Wyeth, as well as Swiss-owned Gerber, all of which would have suffered reduced profits under the new regulations.
