Dumb question - Where did the name Shrub come from?

I missed origins of the name "Shrub"... can someone clue me in?

Molly Ivins (the liberal Texas newspaper columnist) wrote a book called "Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush" I have always assumed she coined the term but perhaps not.

i know Ann Richards used the term "shrub" when they were running against each other, though i can't know for sure that she coined it. maybe Ivins said it to her, or maybe it was the other way 'round!

Way back when Bush the Father was president (aka 41), "The New Republic" had a regular column called "The Shrub Files" which was a hilarious spoof of the president's famous inability to speak in clear and concise sentences.

We're talking a long time ago.

GWB owned an oil company years and years ago that he named "Arbusto", which is "shrub" in Spanish.

Now I know how that "New Republic" columnist came up with it ... or was W. riffing on the column (widely read in the Beltway & beyond)?

If he was (riffing on the column), then it indicates he has a highly evolved sense of humor, folks.

arbusto means bush, so he was trying to be cool and bi-lingual.
in texas, it was called ar BUST o, like bust as in broke, since that's what it did, went broke.
