GBS +, is there something I should know?

I had my 37w mw appt, and I turned out to be GBS+ is there anything I should know about it?

I mean I know the basics, that I have to get the two dosis of antibiotics. Also I was 2cm dilated and 50% last week (didn't care to check this week) so my mw told me that she'd rather have me in the hospital earlier than later.

Any recomendations from those of you who BTDT?

In early labor, I'd ask her if you could come in for the antibiotics and go back home. I'd really push for that if possible- it is not fun to be 2-3cm in the hospital for hours if you don't really need to be there- it really opens up the possibility of a c/s.

Depending on your birth wishes, I'd also ask for the antibiotics to be pushed IM (intra muscular) rather than IV so you're able to stay focused on what you are doing without being weighed down by an IV pole.

And, above all, I'd take acidophilus and eat tons of yogurt and check out other natural things to do to ward off GBS and be retested next week...if it turns out to be neg, you have nothing to worry about during labor (and status for GBS changes all the time anyway).

Good luck!

I like the idea of going for the antibiotics and comming back home, I'll ask my mw about it.

I didn't know you had the option to do it IM instead of IV. My mw told me that they can the IV with some kind of screw (?) and take it off after they were done puting the antibiotic, so I didn't have to have the IV all the time. I'll ask about the IM.

try searching gbs on www.gentlebirth.org

you don't have to have the antibiotics, and it is possible to reverse your status. you can use garlic, probiotics, & other measures that are listed on that site. also you should also get a new swab that has both one rectal reading and one vaginal one. that way you know which part of your body has the gbs. IMO, if its your rectal area its not a big deal. you could try posting your question in birth and beyond too, you may get more replies!

sorry, nak

Personally I would do something to try to treat it and make them test me again.

IA with the others about taking measures to eliminate the GBS & getting retested. I'm sure it'd be nice to not have to worry about one more thing, especially antibiotics & what effects those could have on you for a while.
