Adam Joseph's Birth Story

On Friday evening I lost my mucous plug. Monday morning at about 6am contractions started. At first they were about 10 minutes apart and felt like strong menstrual cramps (nothing like BH ctx). I called DB and asked him to come home for the day, "I think this is it!". He came home where I labored until about 3pm. I switched between lying in bed on my side, leaning against counters and semi-squatting. Before we got ready to go to the birth center I decided to take a hot shower. In the bathroom ctx were coming about 4 minutes apart and were no longer just uncomfortable, they were getting painful. The half hour drive to the birth center was pretty rough. I was having ctx very close together and they took my breath away. I never noticed there were so many railroad tracks on the way there! I had a ctx as soon as we walked into the birth center and my MW walked me through some tricks to make it more manageable. It really helped! As I laid down on the table to get checked, I started to get nervous. What if I was only 3 or 4 centimers dilated? The check was painless and it turns out I was 7-8 cm and my bag of waters was bulging! I couldn't believe I held off that long before coming in! I was really excited because I felt like I didn't have much more time left. I got into the tub about half an hour later and that's when the ctx got really rough. They were coming every 2 minutes and lasted what seemed an eternity. DB was a great coach and kept repeating, "You're doing good" and "I'm so proud of you". I tried every imaginable position in the tub and was in a lot of discomfort. Nobody was in the room but DB and I when my water broke in the tub and I experienced the most pressure/pain I have ever felt in my life! The MW came in and checked me right away, I was fully dilated. I'd heard pushing was a "big relief" and "oddly satisfying". Neither of those were true for me! Pushing HURT and I started feeling out of control. The MW suggested I get out of the tub and try sitting on the toilet. I pushed through one ctx and I could feel the baby's head crowning. I waddled over to the bed and laid down on my side. I screamed so loud with every push. My mom and DB's parents were in the waiting room and they heard everything! I had a difficult time listening to my MW and I basically pushed as hard as I could whenever I felt like it. I was on the bed for no more than 15 minutes when Adam was born sunny-side up with his hand wrapped in the cord next to his head! It was 6:24pm. When he was placed on my chest I was on cloud nine and everything melted away. He was very quiet and alert. He weighed 7lbs 3oz and was 20 in long. I birthed the placenta a few minutes later and I could barely even feel it. I did feel a little sore/raw "down there" and later found out I had a second degree tear that would require stitches. The MW stitched me up, which was actually quite painful. And then I got to breastfeed my baby for the first time. He latched right away and nursed eagerly. About 4 hours later we were at home. I felt a little shaky and very, very tired. Adam slept through the night only waking when I changed his diaper and fed him. I could have done without the tear/stitches but altogether I think I had a great birth experience.

Yay! you did awesome. What a great story. You sound really strong and what a neat delivery. Sorry you tore (hugs) and hope that feels better soon. I got a tiny tear and even it hurts still UGH so I can only imagine.

but the best thing of all is the babe in arms, peaceful wonderful delivery.I wouldn't trade it for the world. thanks for sharing your story.

I love his name by the way--Adam was one of the names on our list and we ended up going with Joseph. :-)
