Daytime television

I have to admit something, I watch daytime television while my girls nap. I am addicted.

I watch the CBS soaps and the character Lizzie on Guiding Light just had a baby (in a car unassisted woot!) well, she was brought to the hospital and they just showed her nursing, great right? WRONG!? She asked the nurse, her grandma, how she knows if the babe is getting enough, grandma/nurse said "well, we will watch her and give her a bottle if we don't think she is getting enough." (!!!!!!!!!) then she took the babe from Lizzie and said, "here, I'll take her now and get her a bottle or something."

I feel the need to write to the powers that be regarding this.....

Ooo, since this is one of those high-drama sorts of shows, maybe Lizzie can be shown crying her eyes out cause she can't breastfeed anymore and is trying desperately to relactate and the grandma can come in and say something like "what are you crying for your baby is doing just fine on formula" and then Lizzie could throw a can of formula at G-ma's head and scream "this is all your fault, you'll never see me or my baby again!!!"

But actually, the way that the show presented it is probably the way that it happens in most hospitals in America. If they hadn't done that, it would not have been a typical hospital, sad but true.

This is the kind of thing the folks at the 3 minute activist at promom.org would love to hear about.

Tell them you are going to watch Passions instead, a bizarre often badly-written soap that is very, very probreastfeeding! Two baby characters have had health issues where they HAD to bf or they'd die!

Honestly, though, I don't have a problem with that episode, *AS LONG AS* the grandma is shown to be a lia--I mean "woefully ignorant".

Don't watch daytime TV. And you could contact the promom site about it.

I think...

that the mom's to reach with breastfeeding promotion DO watch a lot of daytime TV and any sort of positive message does matter, since this type of show did diminish lactation.

If you will post, the URL, I will write them.

Take care.

There was a story line on another soap I happened upon recently. I think it was the Young and the Restless? I don't normally watch that.

The new grandmother kept recommending detachment, saying don't spoil the baby (just home from the hospital) by picking it up too much etc. The new mom kept gently and in a very classy way rebutted by saying things I agreed with. The new grandmother was depicted as foolish.

Then the new gma said she felt like she was useless, the mom overheard, and they had this sweet bonding moment.

Here is the contact info. I am going to fire off a short little letter I think.

Like I said, I watch when my girls are napping, I like it, it's a part of the day I look forward to because I don't have to think and quite honestly, I think waaaaaay too much...its a nice down time for me.

I was just a little dissapointed.

Momtwice, you were right, it was Young and the Restless. My mom clued me into that one because of the baby ebing born. She knows I am always interested in how birth and pregnancy is portrayed on TV....it was upsetting as well. I enjoyed the responses the mom gave the MIL...

I saw this too (I'm a secret GL fan) and was really disappointed, although to be honest I was pleased that they showed her nursing at all. But yeah, it was a very lame portrayal...if you have any concerns about weight gain just grab a bottle! I love how nurse/grandma ripped the baby off the nipple right after Lizzie said she was worried she wasn't getting enough! Ummm, self-fulfilling prophecy, anyone?

I forgot to save a copy of the email I sent but I started out praising them entirely, for the direction of the show and my fav. characters, etc. I praised them for the birth scene and for Lizzie bfing, but then I got into my dissappointment. Hopefully I hear something back...

Does anyone remember when SHeila (either from as the world turns or young & the restless) had a baby, but it was taken away...and later on they discovered she had like a shrine to her baby, as well as a fridge of milk she'd been pumping to give it to her baby when she finally got him/her back?? yeah, that was a great lactivist moment but also a psychopath moment
