Doc wouldn't perform the circ!

I posted here a few days ago because my friend was having her second son circ'd. I sent her a link to a video and a link to Mothering's article on circing. I left it at that.

Today I heard from her that the doctor wouldn't perform the circ because his foreskin was webbed (? I think that's what she said . . .) and that they could look at it again in a couple of weeks or wait until he's a year old. She didn't want to do it when he was a year old also said that maybe he was just meant to stay that way :.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? I didn't know there were reasons doc's wouldn't circ.

Anyways, I just thought that was great news, maybe this poor babe will be able to save his foreskin after all!

According to www.med.umich.edu...

Quote:
Webbed penis occurs when scrotum forms the ventral side of penile shaft.
Yowza!

And then, www.medscape.com says that...

...the foreskin may be necessary in order to reconstruct the penis at a later date.

Yeah, I have a couple of friends both were planning to circ but they couldn't - not sure if it was the webbed thing as well or something else - but they couldn't until their boys were a year old. One has said that, especially now that she knows more about circumcision, she doesn't want to put her 1 year old through that pain....so he'll stay intact! The other one is leaning more towards leaving her son intact and said that she thinks it'd be better to just let him make that decision for himself, but she still has to talk to her DH (when hegets back from Iraq) about it...but at least she's leaning more towards not doing it, woo hoo!

Imagine, if all circumcisions had to wait until a year old.

It might be possible that he has a mild hypopadias and the bottom of the foreskin is not really there. I hadn't heard of webbed before but seems like she would have mentioned it if he had that condition. Since it would be really obvious.

Wouldn't it be great if by webbed the doc really meant attached in the normal way and it was just his way of saving babies from the knife? I know of one doc who told alot of his patients that their sons penis was too small to circ before puberty and that he would end up cutting off way to much because you just can't guess on these things. A little sneaky, but a great way to leave more boys whole.

That's awesome! It's sneaky, but it's the absolute truth too

I guess it's kinda great that he said 'this' but how about just saying "no"?? How about saying "what kind of parent would actually request me to perform such a terrible procedure on an innocent non-consenting human" *shrugs*

oooh I like that. And I think much BETTER than saying no. For some reason people take what doctors say and just think its so great. The fact that he was giving them a medical reason not too is awesome. Wish all docs did that,

Because they just go find someone else to do it. In the States it is much easier to find someone who will do it than it is to find someone who will refuse and the parents just dismiss the doc as a quack. Yes it's underhanded but he really feels it's a human rights issue and not a parental choice.

I just think he should say it loud and clear. just because someone else is going to do something bad doesn't mean you shouldn't be honest. But I guess at least it's a few boys saved, who would otherwise be mutilated, and he is acknowledging the problems with the procedure.
